The deterioration of indoor air quality caused by air pollution continues to pose a health hazard for particles. Especially for infants and children under 15 years old and elderly people over 65 years old in high risk group with high health hazard of particle, spending most of the day indoors, appropriate management of indoor air quality is required. As the prevalence of mechanical ventilation system as a device for indoor air quality control increases, researches on indoor particles removal performance of mechanical ventilation system are being conducted. In general, the evaluation of the particles removal performance of mechanical ventilation systems rarely excludes the effects of outside air particles concentration and Infiltration rate. However, in the case of the old school building with a low air-tightness and high-rise building with a large air infiltration rate, it is considered necessary to consider of the penetration of particles by infiltration rate. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the particles removal performance of mechanical ventilation system considering infiltration. For this reason, the main influencing factors of particles removal performance and infiltration were derived through review of previous studies. In addition, we calculated the input values of the simulation of the influencing factors through the field experiment of the single room, and confirmed the difference of the mechanical ventilation system particles removal performance by the presence or absence of infiltration using the simulation analysis model created based on field experiments. In order to evaluate the particles removal performance under different conditions of infiltration level, virtual building was set up as a high-rise apartment in which the influence of infiltration airflow is dominant, and performed a simulation analysis of indoor particle concentration. Simulation cases were set to represent a building with different levels of infiltration rate depending on the Envelope and entrance door leakage area. Through the interpretation of building air flow rate, pressure distribution, and indoor particle concentration, the particles infiltration rate and mechanical ventilation system particle removal performance was evaluated.
The main findings of this study are as follows.
(1) In order to interpret the indoor particle concentration using the multi-zone simulation, the input values for the simulation such as air-tightness, penetration coefficient, deposition loss rate, system collection efficiency, which are the main influencing factors, were acquired through field experiments. The air exchange rates according to the opening ratio of the damper in the laboratory chamber were 0.07 h-1 and 0.54 h-1, respectively.
(2) As a result of analysis of the indoor particle concentration in a single zone, it was found that the indoor particle concentration was the highest in the room where the mechanical ventilation system was operated and the damper was opened. Under the condition that the mechanical ventilation system is operated, the indoor particle concentration difference due to the presence or absence of infiltration was verified. Therefore, even if the mechanical ventilation system with the same performance is applied, there may be a difference in the particle removal performance of the system according to the air-tightness of the building envelope. (3) As a result of the multi-zone simulation analysis according to the air-tightness level of the virtual high-rise apartment house, the higher the air-tightness, the smaller the difference of the particle concentration according to the floor level. However, even if the same amount of infiltration occurs due to the influence of the air flow characteristics caused by stack effect in winter, in the lower-level of dwelling, the airborne particulate matter directly flows in through the building envelope and the indoor particle concentration increases. On the other hand, particle flowed into the higher-level of dwelling which is deposited and filtered in various airflow path such as elevators and stairs and then, the indoor particle concentration decreased toward the higher-level of dwelling. In the higher-level of dwelling, the indoor particle is exfiltrated through the building envelope, and rather the particle concentration is reduced. It indicates that the indoor particle concentration in high-level of dwelling could be lower than the dwellings where the airtightness is higher.
(4) The influence of infiltration on the particle removal performance of mechanical ventilation systems can be roughly classified into two. First, the system variable is changed by the imbalance of the supply/exhaust airflow rate due to the pressure difference, which acts as a direct influence factor. Secondly, the infiltration and exfiltration of particles by the building airflow affects the indoor particle concentration and acts as an indirect factor on the particle removal performance.
(5) In the newly built apartment houses with high air-tightness performance have not noticeable difference in infiltration rate according to the floor level. However, in the case of the aged apartment houses with poor air-tightness, even if the each dwelling has the same leakage area on envelope, infiltration rate could be more than forty times according to the temperature difference between indoor and outdoor, wind speed, and so on depending on the floor level. Therefore, even in the dwellings of the same air-tightness performance, appropriate system variable changes as infiltration rate caused by the pressure difference is distinguished from the distance from the neutral level. Also, mechanical ventilation system variables could be designed and developed considering the envelope air-tightness as if filter efficiency of the system is low compared with the particle penetration coefficient on the building envelope, increasing the system ventilation rate could reduce the particle removal performance.
(6) It is necessary to consider the airtightness and air flow characteristics of the building when installing the mechanical ventilation system or developing the particle removal performance of the system. In the case of high-rise buildings, the lower the airtightness of the building, it is expected that a high pressure difference and infiltration rate will occur. Therefore, it is necessary to deal with decline and imbalance of system flow rate due to the high pressure difference with application of the fan that can discharge a large output of system flow rate. Also, in buildings with high air-tightness, although the effect of fine dust in the atmosphere is insignificant, it is necessary to select and operate the mechanical ventilation system that takes into account the activities of habitants so that it can respond to the indoor particle generation.
