The coal used in coal-fired power plant in the Republic of Korea is bituminous coal, which is imported from oversea countries. Since it has a higher caloric value and contains more volatile components than anthracite used in the Republic of Korea, the power plants often experience temperature rise and spontaneous combustion when it is stored for a long time, which damages the operation of the power plants. The coal-fired power plant generally store coal in outdoor open space and this method frequently causes civil complaints from a neighborhood due to coal dust dispersion, odor due to spontaneous combustion, and harmful gases. In order to resolve this issue, the storage methods have been changed from the outdoor coal storage to the indoor coal storage. The problem of coal dust dispersion could be solved by switching to the indoor storage, but the spontaneous combustion issue has continued. This study aimed to identify the spontaneous combustion characteristics of coal, which is the main fuel of the coal-fired power plant, and investigate the effects of a spontaneous combustion inhibitor on the prevention of spontaneous combustion at the coal storage shed. In order to examine the effects of a spontaneous combustion inhibitor on the prevention of spontaneous combustion, this study tested two types of coals KPC coal (low-calorie coal from Indonesia) and Bayan coal (low-calorie coal from Indonesia), which were used in coal-fired power plant. Each coal type was divided into a control (no treatment; 10,000 tons) and a spontaneous combustion inhibitor treatment (10,000 tons), and all coal types were placed in cell of shed. Temperature changes of each treatment were measured using a bar thermometer and steam generation was observed visually. The temperature was measured five times per day (03:00, 06:00, 10:00, 17:00, 22:00) and the measured temperature was monitored by a coal storage shed wireless temperature monitoring system installed in the coal control building. The highest temperature of a day was used for the study. The wireless bar thermometer was installed at 1.5m depth from the coal surface for each treatment (two for KPC coal and two for Bayan coal). The maximum measurement temperature was between 60 to 100℃ degree, the initial exothermal stage of spontaneous combustion. The spontaneous combustion inhibitor was injected by installing a temporary pump and piping to the existing water sprinkling system for reducing dust. The spontaneous combustion inhibitor injection system was composed of a chemical tank, a pump (capacity: 600 L/hr), a flow meter, and a piping. The injection concentration of the spontaneous combustion inhibitor was 300 ppm (300 g / Ton Coal) in the first step and 500 ppm (500 g / Ton Coal) in the second step. The spontaneous combustion inhibitor was sprayed using by Transfer Tower-03 (hereinafter referred to as TT) Water Spray Nozzle. The following conclusions were drawn by comparing and observing the changes in the temperature at the core of the coal pile using the spontaneous combustion inhibitor. Firstly, when the 300 ppm of the spontaneous combustion inhibitor was applied to the coals, the effects of the treatment maintained for 14 days after the application. In other words, the temperature increase was suppressed by the treatment for 14 days compared to the non-treatment. However, after 14 days, both the chemical treatment and non-treatment returned back to the initial exothermal stage. Secondly, when the 500 ppm of the spontaneous combustion inhibitor was applied to the coals, the treated coals maintained a temperature lower than the untreated coals at the beginning. However, the temperature of the treated coals abruptly increased from the seventh day of storage and it increased to over 80℃ degree from the 9th day, which was approximately 17℃ degree higher than the untreated coals, to reach the initial exothermal stage. This could be because the Bayan coal used in the second test contained a large amount of moisture and volatiles to make the time of reaching the initial exothermal stage shorter. It was also possible that an exothermal reaction was promoted by the components of the spontaneous combustion inhibitor at a certain temperature and higher. The temperature increase inhibition effects of the coal spontaneous combustion inhibitor maintained up to 14 days. It was believed that the chemical treatment was effective in inhibiting spontaneous combustion. However, it is not possible to generalize the results of two types of bituminous coal because a number of coal types are used in coal-fired power plant* and it will be necessary to study the spontaneous combustion of various bituminous coals more in the future.
