The purpose of this study is to analyze grammatical errors represented in the English writing of elementary students of fifth graders and to know the effect of teaching grammar through error analysis in their writing abilities. The research questions are as follows: First, what are the common aspects of grammatical verb errors represented in the writing of elementary fifth graders? Second, how teaching grammar through error analysis affects the writing abilities of fifth graders? In order to identify the aspect of common verb errors represented in fifth graders’ English writing, two types of written outputs are collected and analyzed after the end of each lesson: free writing and controlled writing. Through analysis of the verb errors, the aspects of grammar students struggle understanding is revealed. To describe the verb errors, they were classified into nine categories: addition, omission, ordering, spelling, avoidance, tense, subject-verb agreement, wrong form and wrong selection. But in describing the errors of question form, omission of interrogative were added to the aforementioned grammatical categories. The categories were made according to Brown(2000)’s classification of the errors and the characteristics of the verb in regards to elementary school students. Also, the verb errors were classified into three tenses: present and present progressive, past and future. The results of the analysis of the verb errors made by students according to this method are given below: First, verb errors of fifth grade learners were varied depending on the tense of the verb. The most frequent errors occurred in the past tense. To describe the characteristics of the errors by tense, the most frequent errors in present and present progressive were wrong selection of the verb. Meanwhile, in the past tense, the most frequent error was tense error—i.e., selecting the wrong tense of the verb in forming their sentences. Finally, in future form, the most frequent error was also tense error. Second, verb errors by fifth grade learners were varied depending on the form of the sentence. Sentence form can be classified as declarative sentences and interrogative sentences. In declarative sentences, the most frequent error was addition—i.e., adding additional superfluous verbs while writing a sentence, however, in interrogative sentences, the most frequent error was omission—i.e., omitting essential verbs necessary for sentence clarity and correctness. Through the analysis of the verb errors, grammatical instruction was added to the experimental group. In order to find out the effect of grammatical instruction in writing abilities, both the comparative group and experimental group were tested with a preliminary writing examination and post writing examination. Both examinations were classified into free writing and controlled writing. In order to find out the effect of grammar teaching through error analysis in writing abilities, the preliminary writing examination and post writing examination were analyzed by the response sample t-tests by SPSS. The results are given below: First, analyzing the post writing examinations of the comparative group and experimental group, the results showed statistically significant improvements in both the free writing and controlled writing. Also, analyzing the preliminary writing examination and post writing examination in the experimental group, the results showed statistically significant development in both the free writing and controlled writing. Given these results, there was a positive effect of teaching grammar as proven through the error analysis in their writing abilities. This study analyzed verb errors in writing outputs of elementary fifth grade learners. Through the analysis of verb errors, grammatical instructions were planned and taught in order to know the effect of teaching grammar in writing abilities. The results showed the aspects of verb errors of fifth grade learners were varied by the tense and sentence type. And it showed positive effect of teaching grammar through error analysis in their writing abilities as their verb errors decreased after grammatical instruction. As a result of this research, it was possible to figure out the grammatical difficulties that learners have while using verbs. Moreover, by teaching these grammatical difficulties, it can have a positive effect in writing abilities. Considering this result, it is recommended to introduce grammar in Elementary English Education.
