The purpose of this study is to find out how the request and refusal strategies used in online messenger situations vary by social factors for those who are learning Korean as a foreign language. 53 Koreans, 49 Chinese and 29 Japanese participated in the study and the Dicourse Completion Task(DCT), based on online messenger situation, was composed of eight questions for each speech act, collected online, and analyzed the results by group and by factor. First, according to analysis by each group, Korean groups shows tendency to use various strategies depending on requested situations, but other groups rely on specific strategies. In addition, according to analysis by language showed that the strategies used by Chinese groups differed by their levels, and the strategies used by Japanese groups were similar. Especially in the case of Chinese intermediate learner groups, there was a tendency not to recognize various request and reject expressions used in various situations rather than advanced learner groups. The advanced learner group was aware of a variety of request expressions compared to intermediate learners, but the proportion of responses that applied them appropriately to the situation was very low, with the majority using only some of the strategies they often used. Second, study shows differences in the strategies used by each group according to the change in each factor. In request speech act, each group is affected differently by distance and situation factors. As the distance relation decreases, the frequency and type of request strategy reduces, and all learner groups have the same burden of requesting behavior regardless of distance. As for situation factor, all groups feel more burdened with requests at work rather than at school. In the case of refusal speech act, the use of strategy depends mainly on power relations and situation factors. All groups use more strategies at work than at school when the strategies they use at work are more polite, and when the power relations are the same than when they are high. Finally, without considering various factors, learners made errors such as using strategies for online messenger situations that Koreans rarely use, or unintentionally making spelling mistakes. This shows that there is a difference in strategies used by Korean speakers and learners in certain speech act when using online messengers, and that learners need the ability to control the use of the messenger language according to the purpose or situation of the conversation. This study is significant in that learners who use online messenger need to recognize proper use of strategies according to various factors by looking at the aspects of using strategies in online languages, which have become an important means of communication.
