The purpose of this study was to understand the effects of art therapy on the psychological adjustment of a child with the experience of being bullied. Specifically, this study aimed to investigate factors causing bullying, problem behaviors caused by bullying, therapeutic factors of art therapy, and effects of art therapy. This study is a single-case study on art therapy and the participant was an 8-year-old elementary school student who experienced bullying at school. Individual art therapy was conducted once a week for 60 minutes per session from April 2019 to February 2020, and the art therapy consisted of a total of 37 sessions. The research data consisted of verbatim transcripts of each session of art therapy, data of interviews with the mother, and the researcher's memos, and the collected data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman's data analysis method through matrices and networks. In addition, HTP and KSD tests were used as auxiliary assessment tools, and the analysis of differences between pre- and post-intervention scores of HTP and KSD tests was conducted.
The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, factors causing bullying were identified as bullying by friends, belittling others, distracted and impulsive behaviors, pretentious behaviors, unsuitable words in given situations, and dysfunctional parenting attitudes. Second, regarding problem behaviors due to bullying, the child overindulged in computer and mobile games, had a negative self-concept, and showed aspects of school maladjustment, exhibiting avoidance behaviors or aggressive behaviors in response to problems. Third, therapeutic factors of art therapy were identified as the therapist, art activity, and parent factors. With respect to the therapist factors, the therapist's actively listening to the child, empathy, supportive responses, suggesting alternatives or guiding the child to see himself by putting himself in others' positions in the process of art therapy process, and performing parental counseling were found to have a positive effect. In terms of the art activity factors, as the child was immersed in art activities, he expressed negative emotions through art work and felt pleasure and a sense of accomplishment, which was considered to have a positive influence on the child. As to the parent factors, changes in daily life attitudes and parenting attitudes brought about changes in the child. Fourth, art therapy improved the child's self-esteem, increased his ability to express himself clearly, and decreased his problem behaviors such as game overindulgence and aggressive behaviors. These changes resulted in the improvement of his relationships with his friends and his adjustment to various aspects of school life.
In conclusion, the results of this study showed that art therapy helped to alleviate problem behaviors of a child with the experience of being bullied in school, and had a positive effect on the child's psychological adjustment. The study findings are expected to serve as the basic data for art therapy to help children who are victims of bullying at school in the future.
