The purpose of this study is to find out the relationship between the
risk perception, practice, general characteristics, and the frequency of
needle stabs as part of minimizing and preventing the health risks caused
by needle stabs.
Questionnaires were distributed to 220 clinical pathologist in
metropolitan D. Among them, 192 questionnaires were used as the final
analysis data, except for the questionnaires with missing values.
All statistics were analyzed with the SPSS 25.0 program. A frequency
performed to identify differences in stab experiences according to
general characteristics and stab-related characteristics. ANOVA was
conducted to understand the difference between the stab risk perception
and stab risk practice according to the stab experience, and a Scheffe
test was conducted as a post-test. A binary logistic regression analysis
was performed to identify factors affecting the stab experiences.
Of the 192 study subjects, 122 people (63.5%) have experienced stabs
and 70 (36.5%) have not. The stab experience was the most common (72.3%)
in the age group of 20-29 years, and 78.0% of the subjects with hospital
experience of less than 5 years experienced stabs a lot, showing a
significant difference.
The situations of stab accidents were found to be high in the order of
separation and disposal of needles (31.1%), preparing for inspection
(25.4%) and when blood is transferred to the container (13.9%), and
disposable syringes (58.2%) were the highest type of the syringes used.
In the stab risk perception, the less the stab experience, the higher
the stab risk perception score, while in the stab risk practice, the less
the stab experience, the higher the stab risk practice score, showing a
significant difference. The most subjects answered that the main cause of
needle stabs and the method of stab prevention were the lack of user
attention (43%) and reinforcement of user attention (37.5%).
Based on the results of this study, strengthening the ability of
individuals with insufficient career and experience in clinical trials as
much as possible by identifying the characteristics of clinical
pathologists' needle stabs and using specialized and realistic training
methods and improved work instructions and introducing devices that are
safe from stabs, such as safety syringes, will create a safe working
environment from the health risks of needle stabs in the future.
