The purpose of this study is to report the danger of needlestick injuries in dental hygienists and to propose infection control guidelines.
This study surveyed the actual state of needlestick injuries through a self-administered survey of 253 dental hygienists. The domestic and foreign infection control guidelines were compared, and the safety devices for the needlestick in the Korean market were investigated. The results are as follows.
1. Out of the 253 subjects (59.3%), 150 experienced needlestick injuries an average of 1.28 times each in the last year. Of these 150 subjects, 110 (46.0%) experienced needlestick injuries when they were returning the cap of a syringe used for anesthesia.
2. The survey of the experience of needlestick injuries according to the needle handling method showed a significant difference between the cases of ‘returning the needle cap’(p<0.01) and ‘removing the cap with my hand’(p<0.01).
3. The comparison of the domestic and foreign infection control guidelines showed that not returning the needle cap is recommended, but there were key regulations such as the use of the one-hand closing technique when returning the needle cap, the use of the device designed to grab the needle cap, or the classification, evaluation, and selection of the engineering-designed devices each year.
4. The survey of the safety devices for the needlestick in the Korean market revealed an automatic needle separator and safe medical needle disposer(YLC-1004S), and a dental needle remover. For the needle cap holder, there was the Captor deluxe needle holder and for the needle-free and painless syringes, INJEX and Comfort-in.
5. The injection control guidelines for needlestick injuries were proposed by composing them into general precautions and recommendations per treat ment process.
The results of this study revealed the common occurrence of needlestick injuries among dental hygienists when they are returning the cap of a needlestick, and the needlestick safety devices. Safe medical treatment can be expected with the use of the proposed infection control guidelines for needlestick injuries at dental offices.
