Overpopulation in the cities and frequent occurrence of abnormal weather due to global climate change is deteriorating the quality of the urban environment. One of the main reason of this phenomenon is fine dust, which furthermore poses a threat to the lives and safety of citizens. The concentration of fine dust in Seoul in 2015 (The World Health Organization's recommended standard of 25 μg/m3 in 2019, a steady increase from an annual average of 23 μg/m3.) has surpassed the recommended standard set by World Health Organization. One of the most vulnerable area to fine dust is the old low-rise residential area in Seoul that are mostly located on hillside. This is due to densely placed old houses and narrow alleys in the region. In this study, we have compared three types of green control in the alley of the old low-rise residential area and analyzed the reduction effects of PM 2.5 concentration through Computer Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation. To begin with, the amount of adsorption and reduction distance were relatively high in the pilot model for each green area, while the amount and area of fine dust reduction by height were high in the wall green area. Based on this, when the simulation for the alley application model was conducted, the result was different from that of pilot model depending on physical characteristics of alley, such as nodules, slopes, and road width. First, at the nodule point where the horizontal and the horizontal meet, fine dust reduction effect in the horizontal green area was high regardless of height. Second, fine dust reduction effect in the horizontal green area was high in the areas with a gentle slope. In the steep section, the reduction effect was high at 1m, which is pedestrian height, 1.5m, 2m, and 5m, which is the height of first floor of a building. Third, the reduction effect of green wall was high for the narrow roads. Fourth, the rooftop green area showed relatively high fine dust reduction effects in the 10m section. However, the amount of reduced fine dust did not appear high. Based on these results, it is required to find appropriate green space arrangement that matches physical characteristic and current situation of alley in order to improve the fine dust reduction effect on the side of the alley in the low-rise residential area on slope.
