This thesis aims at analyzing “Cinderella,” “Snow White,” and “Rapunzel” from Transformations(1971) by Anne Sexton, which re-writes 17 stories of Grimm Brothers' fairy tales, from a feminist perspective. Sexton(1928-1974) was a well-known American woman poet who expressed her own personal feelings with her intimate experiences. She paid attention to the situations of women oppressed by society and raised her voice to represent them. Grimm Brothers' fairy tales are universally known with an advantage of easy access to them; yet, they are problematic when simply interpreted as happy-ending love stories between princes and princesses or didactic narratives that reinforce the existing social order. By rewriting Grimm brothers’ fairy tales, Sexton reconstructs the situations of women suffering in the patriarchal society of the 20th century in the United States. As Transformations has the power to subvert the plots and endings of the original stories, it is able to show the conflicts of the time and the confusion surrounding women's identities. This thesis raises specific questions for each chapter, using Critical Literacy, a pedagogical methodology, in order to effectively reveal these aspects. By asking these critical questions, readers will be able to interpret the texts from a new perspective, looking beyond the conventional values. This thesis focuses on the place where women are exchanged by men, the exchange values of women, and the exclusion of women's desires from the discourse of male dominance. The task of reading Sexton’s Transformations from the feminist perspective is to examine identities of women who are erased from the patriarchal society. Furthermore, it engages readers to raise critical questions about the text, showing potentials to suggest new methodologies for English Literature Education.
