For this study, the author selected 120 picture books for infants aged 0-2 published in Korea. This study explores the interactivity with features in the physical structure and contents of infants‘ picture books from March 28 to May 30, 2020. Collected data were classified and categorized to analyze the interactivity. The study questions are as follows:
1. How about the interactivity features shown up in the physical structure of infants' picture books? 2. How about interactivity features shown up in the contents of infants' picture books? 2-1. How about the interactivity features shown up in the pictures of infant‘s picture books? 2-2. How about the interactivity features shown up in the texts of infants' picture books?
First in order to find the answers to the above question, this study divides the discussion points into book size, material, book-binding and mechanism and thereby, draws the themes. Thus, it was found that the interactivity features in terms of the physical structure were 'instillation of the physical confidence', 'sensuous amusement', 'engagement in the physical space' and 'manual play'. 'The instillation of the physical confidence' was shown as the interactivity of the book sizes. For example, the infants could well handle the picture books of small sizes by using their hands, feeling confident physically. 'Sensuous amusement' was shown up as the interactivity of materials. For example, infants felt that cloth and vinyl could be put into the mouth, and such amusement was judged as a proper interactivity amusing the infants of the oral phase. 'Engagement in the physical space' was shown up as the interactivity of the book-binding. Infants' picture books use cross, longitudinal or folding-screen bindings. Thus, it was judged that the infants feel engaged into a physical space when opening the picture books. 'Manual play' was shown up as the interactivity of the mechanism. First of all, the manipulation mechanism was shown up as flapping, folding, sliding and punching. Such activities were perceived as infants' exploration of the physical structure of the picture books. The sensuous device was judged to be perceived by the infants using their tactile and auditory senses. Second, this study explored the interactivity of the pictures by dividing it into form and organization. Thus, it was found that the interactivity of the pictures were shown up as 'reading the pictures' and inviting others to the pictures'. 'Reading the pictures' were shown up as the interactivity of the formative elements. In infants' picture books, the forms were much omitted or simplified, while the lines were contrasted with the colors, allowing for exploration of the real texture. Such interactivity would help the infants to be focused on the pictures, inducing them to read the text. In particular, the interactivity of the forms was expected to help the infants to develop their literacy by reading the pictures. 'Inviting to the pictures' was shown up as interactivity among the structural elements. Infants' picture books were characterized by balanced layout of pictures, inducing the infants to view the pictures horizontally and nearby. The interactivity therethrough was found to invite the infants to the pictures. Hence, the infants would close up at the objects in the picture repeatedly to have a positive attitude towards the reality.
Third, this study explored the interactivity of the texts by dividing them into writing styles and plots. Thus, it was found that the interactivity of the text was shown up as 'auditory amusing' and 'imaginative playing'. 'Auditory amusing' was found to be equal to the interactivity of the writing styles. Infants' picture books combine 1 ~ 4 words to be simple and rhythmical. Hence, the adult is obliged to read infants' picture books rhythmically, amusing them. 'Imaginative playing' was identified as interactivity of the plot in the words. The plot of infants' picture books was characterized by linearly repeated plot, non-linearly playing plot, additional playing plot and bi-directional plot. Infants can well easily imagine the next story through the repeated plot, and further, may have a creative experience by associating the picture books with the stories through the bi-directional plotting.
