The purpose of this study was to revisit the topic of children and children’s knowing through the wu(無) of 『Chuang-tzu』 and seek out implications for early childhood education on this basis. Early childhood education has tended to observe children using a single prescribed standard, and a question is raised concerning the validity of leading children’s knowing on one prescribed path. 『Chuang-tzu』 states that everything is connected to the living kl(氣) flow and that there are no boundaries to existence. Therefore, the wu(無) of 『Chuang-tzu』 represents the fullness from which all things are created. The wu(無) of 『Chuang-tzu』 also has the lasting feature of seeing that all things are connected. Hence, beings are intertwined because there are no boundaries, and wu(無) is shown to have an open nature. There seems to be a different generation than before because wu(無) of 『Chuang-tzu』 cannot be defined. Therefore, the characteristics of the wu(無) of 『Chuang-tzu』 include the existing ones and those that transcend them. Moreover, the wu(無) of 『Chuang-tzu』 is invisible but in motion. The view of reality in terms of the wu(無) of 『Chuang-tzu』 is as follows. Chuang-tzu states that all life comes from wu(無) and that the subject is intertwined with the object in the process of life. Then, both the subject and the object change. Therefore, 『Chuang-tzu』 sees everything as one. The epistemology based on 『Chuang-tzu』’s view of reality is as follows. 『Chuang-tzu』 states that knowing cannot be defined; therefore, according to 『Chuang-tzu』, knowing and not knowing work together. This knowing can be realized when one is not trapped in the framework of knowledge. Knowing is not defined. Some subjects are intertwined with the object they face and become the object. Knowing is revealed during the process of existence(object) itself. For this reason, this knowing is not defined or given externally. Knowing means that the subject lives its own life by itself. Therefore, the image of children, as seen through the wu(無) of 『Chuang-tzu』, is as follows. Children are akin to living chaos, because they have an unregulated fullness. 『Chuang-tzu』 states that the reality is that the flow of kl(氣) is intertwined with everything and reveals itself in its present form. In other words, there is no substance defined as children. Children also do not have foreknowledge: they are extreme beings from the perspective of wu-dae(無待). Consequently, children change over time, as they meet and intertwine with all things. Such children are living beings. In this regard, children are in a state of wu-wei-tzu-jan(無爲自然), because they can make both themselves and others live naturally. Children’s knowing, as seen through the wu(無) of 『Chuang-tzu』, is as follows. Children meet the object itself without prejudice. They are intertwined with the object and become one. Thus, children generate different ways of knowing at every moment. In response, children empty their foreknowledge and constantly transform their knowing. Children’s knowing is therefore closer to living real life than chasing after given knowledge is. In the process, children are in harmony with all things. They learn more about the existing values that were defined in the target and enjoy such enlightenment. These findings suggest that early childhood education should look at children from the point of view of wu(無). When one understands children, one is able to look at one’s entire relationship with life. They also reveal that children are a natural creation of knowing, suggesting that in early childhood education, children should be seen as the nature that created them. This study also suggests that the early childhood education curriculum should resemble so-yo-yoo(逍遙遊). For this purpose, part of the education plan should be removed and replaced with free time and space and open educational contents. In addition, the early childhood education curriculum should allow children to meet and become intertwined with other subjects in person. To do so, the curriculum should include play without a purpose. This will lead to living a natural life according to the rhythm of children. Such a curriculum considers its direction that is being created with the children. A teacher of early childhood education should empty his standards of mind and meet children without prejudice. Then, the teacher can become entangled with the children and support them in living naturally. In this regard, this study is meaningful in that it rediscovers children, especially their fundamental characteristics, based on the point of view of wu(無), whereby they share similar characteristics. I think this will pave the way for early childhood education to move forward, based on the idea that children and knowing are the fundamental themes of early childhood education.
