This is a descriptive survey study which was conducted to identify the degrees of nurses’ emotional labor, job stress, and fatigue, examining the correlations between these variables, and providing basic data for helping reduce their emotional labor, job stress, and fatigue. As research subjects, 219 nurses were randomly sampled from three general hospitals with 500 beds or more, which were located in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. This study gathered the data from November 5 to 14, 2019. In terms of research tools, for emotional labor, this study used a Korean version of the emotional labor strategy tool for nurses, which Choi and Kim (2018) created by translating and verifying the emotional labor strategy tool developed originally by Diefendorff, et al. (2005); for job stress, it employed a Korean version of the job stress tool for nurses, which Kim, et al. (2015) suggested by translating and verifying French’s (2000) measurement tool for nurses’ job stress; and for fatigue, it used the measurement tool for nurses’ fatigue that Jang (2013) developed. According to the research results, the mean scores of the subjects were 3.40 (±0.39) points (out of 5) for emotional labor, 2.43 (±0.63) points (out of 4) for job stress, and 3.20 (±0.63) points (out of 5) for fatigue. There were statistically significant differences in emotional labor, depending on the subjects’ age (F=6.59, p=.002), current job position (t=2.93, p=.004), and years of service in clinical position (F=4.33, p=.006). That is, nurses in their 40s or older showed a greater degree of emotional labor than those in their 20s and 30s; nurses in charge had a higher level of emotional labor than general-duty nurses; and those with longer clinical career had a greater degree of emotional labor. Next, according to the subjects’ age, job stress showed a statistically significant difference. In other words, the subjects in their 30s had a higher level of job stress than those in their 40s or . This study also found statistically significant differences in fatigue, depending on the subjects’ age (F=10.92, p=.000), marital status (t=3.09, p=.002), current job position (t=4.55, p=.000), current department (F=2.41, p=.037), and clinical career (F=3.50, p=.016). Specifically, the younger they were, the greater degrees of fatigue they exhibited; those who were single felt a higher level of fatigue; general-duty nurses had a higher level of fatigue than those in charge or higher; and those who worked in dialysis units and internal medicine wards and had less than two years of clinical career showed greater degrees of fatigue. In terms of the correlation between the subjects’ emotional labor, job stress, and fatigue, this study found a statistically significant correlation between emotional labor and job stress (r=.299, p<.001), between emotional labor and fatigue (r= .167, p<.001), and between job stress and fatigue (r=.376, p<.001). That is, the higher degrees of emotional labor the subjects had, the higher levels of job stress and fatigue they showed; and the higher levels of job stress they felt, the greater degrees of fatigue they had. The subjects’ job stress, current job position, and emotional labor were found to explain 21.5% of the degree of fatigue. This study suggests that tailored intervention strategies and education by diverse factors are needed and the nursing environment should be improved in order to reduce nurses’ emotional labor, job stress, and fatigue.
