Mothers, who raise children with developmental disabilities, go through complex conflicts due to their children's developmental disabilities, ideal mother role, and social prejudice about disabilities. This study was intended to contain the process of reflecting on the individual maternal experience while nurturing children with developmental disabilities within the maternal ideology norm using the research method of autoethnography. The theoretical framework of symbolic interaction theory was applied in the process of reflecting how a mother perceives, accepts and changes maternal experiences related to her child's developmental disabilities. What were collected and analyzed to achieve the purpose of the study includes self-recollection materials, interview materials at the time of appearing on KBS' 'Family of Love' broadcast, materials of sand play counseling treatment, literature materials, two movie video materials (about Kevin, Happy Bathhouse), and researcher's prenatal care diary data. A triangulation was conducted with the guidance of the supervisor and three doctoral course students in order to secure the validity and credibility of the research. In addition, Duncan'(2004) six criteria for evaluation were considered in proceeding with the research. Followings are the main contents that this researcher has reviewed through research questions. First, as a mother of a child with developmental disability, I was able to reflect that I could not escape the guiltiness of “I am not a good mother” because an ideal role of mother is internalized. Maternal ideology is already established before becoming a mother by interacting through various life experiences and symbols. In addition, child's health is directly linked to mother's responsibility, and when the child becomes ill or has a disability, it leads to blaming mother for the cause. Second, raising a child with developmental disability puts me in a situation where my mother's role is blamed for the developmental disability of my child who is not likely to improve. In addition, the obstacle-overcoming-myth that child's disability should be overcome ensuring a successful rearing gets a mother to make every efforts for mother's role. As children with developmental disabilities are difficult to become independent even as adults, mothers are always concerned about their children's future, and the situation where mothers are blamed continues. Lastly, as a mother raising a child with developmental disability, I should be able to try to accept and acknowledge myself as I am, even if I make mistakes and can not fully care for my child. Furthermore, we need to recognize that we can be happy with our children when we are able to realize our own self by separating ourselves deeply connected with them psychologically. Based on the research results, the following are needed to improve the immediate problems of mothers who raise their children with developmental disabilities. First, it is necessary to reconsider the socio-structural problems faced by mothers raising children with developmental disabilities. Second, it is necessary to redefine the concept of 'good mother' that our society talks about and the social consensus accordingly. Third, in case that the mother has to provide full care even when children with developmental disabilities enter adulthood, it is necessary to seek social solutions beyond the individual level. Fourth, an active support from society is needed so that mothers raising children with developmental disabilities can have opportunities for growth through self-realization in society. Lastly, a policy support is needed to facilitate disability understanding education, disability human rights education, and public interest campaigns in order to improve social perception of developmental disability.
