In this study, we analyzed the differences in sleep stages based on the heart rate features representing the variation of the autonomic nervous system during sleep stage transition, and explored the possibility of utilization as a feature utilized in the classification of the sleep stages of the variation features. A total of 10 subjects were tested for sleep polysomnography, and ECG data were collected. During transition of sleep stages, the variation features representing the trend of fluctuations in the heart rate before and after the sleep stage and the degree of variation were proposed. ANOVA was performed between the heart rate variability features of the 1 minute, 3 minutes, and 5 minutes measurement time before and after the sleep stage and between the sleep stages. In the sleep stage classification process of ECG features using the decision tree method, the variability features showed higher importance in the classification process than the existing features used in the sleep stage classification. After that, the sleep stage was classified into RF and XGBoost, which are tree-based ensemble classification models, based on existing features and variability features. When the variability feature is added to the existing feature-based classification performance, the classification performance is improved. This study is significant in that it showed that the heart rate variability feature can more clearly identify the sleep stage than the existing ECG feature during transition of sleeps stage, and can be used in the sleep stage classification to improve performance.
