Super-repellent surfaces prepared from inorganic-organic core-shell hybrid materials have become an attractive topic due to their numerous applications and superior properties caused by combining low surface energy of fluorinated polymer shells and mechanical, thermal stabilities of inorganic cores. The core-shell particles have been synthesized by growing polymer chains from the inorganic surface that is called surface initiated radical polymerizations such as ATRP, RAFT, NMP and ROP. However, the remaining metallic catalysts are difficult to be completely removed after reactions or several reaction steps are required. Meanwhile, thiol-lactam initiated radical polymerization (TLIRP) has been performed in a simple process, and the initiator can be easily removed after polymerization is completed. In this thesis, a TLIRP method was used to synthesize inorganic silica (SiO2)-fluorinated polymer core-shell particles, which were applied to fabricate super-repellent surfaces. Prior to polymerization, surfaces of the SiO2 particles were functionalized with thiol groups because they were used as initiators in the TLIRP system in presence of γ-butyrolactam as a radical generating agent. Herein, SiO2 particles and fluorinated polymer chains provided two main requirements to coated surfaces; surface roughness and low surface energy, respectively. The major viewpoint of this study is to investigate the effect of the surface roughness generated by the SiO2 particles on the super-repellent properties of the surfaces. SiO2@poly(1H,1H,2H,2H-heptadecafluorodecyl methacrylate-co-methyl methacrylate) (SiO2@poly(FMA-co-MMA)) core-shell spheres were synthesized via TLIRP. In 1H-NMR analyses, the CH2 peaks (4.26 and 2.56 ppm) from poly(FMA) and the CH3 peak (3.53 ppm) from poly(MMA) were observed, indicating successful preparation of SiO2@poly(FMA-co-MMA) by TLIRP. These SiO2@poly(FMA-co-MMA) core-shell particles were coated on aluminum substrates using spray coating . After spray coating and heat treatment, the maximum water and hexadecane contact angles of the coated aluminum plate were 164.0° and 130.1°, respectively when core-shell particles with high SiO2 content were coated. When the coated surfaces were heat-treated above the glass transition temperature, the surfaces coated with core-shell particles of low SiO2 content were flattened due to sedimentation of polymer shell. Whereas, roughness of the surfaces maintained after heat treatment on the surface coated with core-shell particles of high SiO2 content, and thus it exhibited higher contact angle of water and hexadecane than those of low silica content. Secondly, a series of SiO2@PFMA core-shell particles composed of core particles with different sizes were prepared via TLIRP, in order to compare differences in superamphiphobicities of the surfaces caused by differences in the surface roughness depending on SiO2 particle size. Unlike the core-shell particles with copolymer (FMA-co-MMA), only PFMA homopolymer was used to clearly study the effect of particle size. The each thiol-functionalized SiO2 particle with an average particle size of 12, 80, 150, or 350 nm was used for TLIRP. Likewise coating of the SiO2@PFMA particles on aluminum substrates was carried out by spray coating and then thermally treated. During the spray coating, the aggregated core-shell particles due to solvent evaporation were irregularly deposited on the aluminum substrates and thus hierarchical structures were created. On the aluminum surface coated with SiO2@PFMA composed of 46 wt% of 12 nm SiO2, the water/hexadecane contact and sliding angles were 178.5°/159.2° and 1°/7°, respectively. The core-shell particles prepared with smaller size of SiO2, especially 12 nm SiO2, formed a more stable superamphiphobic surface owing to the hierarchical structure caused by porosity and micropapilae than those of the surfaces coated with core-shell particles including the larger silica particles. Additionally, transparency of glass substrate coated with SiO2@PFMA using spray coating could be tailored by controlling concentration of the coating solution. The cross-cut tape tests on the heat-treated samples showed that adhesion between the SiO2@poly(FMA-co-MMA) (or the 12nm-SiO2(46)@PFMA) and the aluminum substrate was classified as 5B.
