Purpose: The purpose of this study was to confirm whether earthing by walking barefoot on red clay road stabilizes the autonomic nervous system and reduces the blood pressure. Methods: Thirty-three healthy adults older than 20 years who agreed to the study objectives and experimental processes voluntarily participated in this study. By randomization, 16 participants were assigned to the experimental group and 17 to the control group. All study participants were asked to walk 500 m on a plain loess road. The participants in the experimental group were earthed by walking barefoot on the ground while those in the control group wore shoes and walked the same course. The experiment was conducted twice, each for 15 min; 30 min in total. Measurements were performed before and after each session, with a break of 10 min, and the activity of the autonomic nervous system and blood pressure were measured using an autonomic activity sensor and a blood pressure monitor, respectively. Collected data were analyzed using the two-way repeated measures ANOVA to test for significant differences between the groups. All statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS package. A p-value less than .05 was considered statistically significant. Results: In terms of changes over time, interactions between time and exercise, and differences between groups, both sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous activites, the balance ratio of the autonomic nervous system, the systolic blood pressure measurements, and measurements of heart rate were not significantly different between the two groups(p>.05). Except for the group comparison(p.05). Conclusion: In the present study, a deceasing trend in mean value of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous activity, blood pressure, and heart rate were observed. However, the results were not statistically or clinically significant since for the participants were healthy adults. Therefore, we conclude that one-time earthing by walking barefoot on red clay road does not produce remarkable results in terms of its effects on the autonomic nervous system and blood pressure.
