Trust, one of essential elements in building any kind of transaction relationships, is not easy to construct. Challenges for building trust become tougher when the counterparts of the relationship are from different cultures. Cultural factors at national level affect belief, behavior, and values that an individual has, varying determinants for trust building across cultures (Thomas & Mueller, 2000). This study aims to investigate how the factors of national culture (Hofstede, 2011) affect the mechanism of trust building between trustor and trustee, by considering the following factors of trust building: ability, benevolence and integrity of trustee (Mayer, Davis, & Schoorman, 2007). Furthermore, this study examines whether organizational identity (OI) strengthens the relationship between the three factors and the level of trust. The comparative analysis utilizes the data collected from employees in South Korea and Brazil, which share several characteristics of culture, while having contrasting ones at the same time. The results of statistical analyses show that there seems not to exist significant difference in ability of trustee in both countries, while the integrity is more critical in South Korea than Brazil, as hypothesized. However, the benevolence is more important in Brazil, in contrast to the hypothesis. The moderating effect of OI did not exist. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed to find the reasons behind.
