The purpose of this study is to investigate the perceptions of elementary school learners and their parents concerning English online classes in public education, which have continued since its implementation in April 2020, and to seek directions for more effective English online content for the future. To this end, three research questions were set up as follows: First, what is the perception of elementary school learners on the effectiveness of e-learning English online content-based classes? Second, what is the perception of elementary school learners and parents about the length of classes and segmented content in e-learning English online content utilization classes? Third, what is the perception of elementary school learners' self-direction when participating in e-learning English online content-based classes? For this study, 5th graders at a school in Gyeongi Province, who have taken online English classes from September to November, 2020 participated. The online classes consisted of content-based videos on an e-learning site. Content-based English classes are online classes in which students watch videos, animations, links, etc., and perform tasks suggested in the video. They then provide feedback to teachers using an on-line bulletin board. The study was conducted based on the survey responses of 149 students and 88 parents in the fifth grade at the elementary school where online classes were used. For a more detailed study, six students were randomly sampled and interviewed based on their responses to online class interest. The results of a survey on the perception of content-based English online classes are as follows: First, elementary school students preferred dynamic videos. Second, the participants of this study recognized that the content-based English classes currently being taken were as effective as studying textbook content. Third, students preferred relatively short content within 5-10 minutes, while parents preferred content over 20 minutes. Fourth, both students and parents preferred the classes in a form of a segmented online clip cut for a certain length rather than a cylindrical content. Fifth, in the perception of self-direction in learning during online classes, both students and parents recognized that students were participating and studying well during online lessons. Lastly, there were some requests for more interactive communication between teacher and students and real-time video lessons. Based on these results, it will be suggested to consider applying short, fragmented content when producing English online classes for elementary school students and to gradually connect content-based classes to interactive real-time classes. Follow-up studies are needed to supplement the limitations of this study. First, since this study was only targeting 5th grade students in a specific school, it is necessary to study more sampling groups and other grades of elementary schools in the future. Second, learners could not confirm whether they were actually learning or just playing the videos, without watching; therefore, a research device that can distinguish the difference is needed for subsequent studies. Third, in addition to the perception of the effectiveness, length and segmental content, and self directed learning of the online classes investigated in this study, it is worth considering a survey of the perception of various factors of online classes. Fourth, there is a need for research on the efficient presentation of English class contents on other platforms. Lastly, in addition to the content-based classes, it is expected that research on various types of online classes that parallel or link real-time video classes would continue.
