This study comparatively analyzed the morphological characteristics and the pulping, physical, accelerated aging, and Chinese ink spreading properties of Hanji, which was manufactured from the upper, middle, and lower part of paper mulberry bast fibers. It further aimed to provide fundamental data on the suitable usage for Hanji made with different paper mulberry parts, based on the results of the characteristics analysis. The results of the morphological characteristics of manufactured Hanji showed that the fiber length of upper part was the longest as 11.9±5.0 ㎜, and its width was the narrowest as 22.6±3.7 ㎛. Regarding pulping properties, the upper part’s yield was low. The result of the sheet formation (L.T.) showed that Hanji made with the upper part of paper mulberry fibers, had the best sheet formation, whereas Hanji made with the middle part had the poorest sheet formation. The strength analysis showed that Hanji made with the upper part of paper mulberry fibers gave the highest tensile strength, whereas Hanji made with the middle part gave the highest tearing strength and folding endurance. The analysis of the accelerated aging properties showed that Hanji made with the upper part of the bast fibers gave a little difference in total color diffferece(△E), thus demonstrating stability against aging. The analysis of the Chinese ink spreading properties showed that in the static ink spreading test, Hanji made from the lower part of the bast fibers showed the smallest ink spreading area. In the dynamic ink spreading test, the Hanji made from the middle part resulted the largest ink spreading area in both length and width. This research found that Hanji made from the upper part of the paper mulberry bast fibers was suitable for restoration, backing, or reinforcement of paper-related relics because of its morphological properties such as long fiber length and thin cell walls and color stability against aging. Hanji made from the middle part was suitable for conservation treatment or as printing paper, because it had high tearing strength and folding endurance. Hanji made from the lower part was suitable for windows, flooring, or filtration, because of short fiber length, thick cell walls, and high pulp yield. It showed also suitable as calligraphy paper because it showed small Chinese ink spreading area and length.
