This study investigates the concept of existentialism and the existential position or its view of humanity, based on the philosophies of Jean-Paul Sartre and Søren Kierkegaard. This study also searches for the ways of concrete and realistic depiction of humans through the works of Alberto Giacometti and Lucian Freud, the well-known existentialists in the history of art. By this study, the author of this study intended to search for the methodology of my own art to take and deepen. Beginning with the philosophy of Kierkegaard who represented the human existence by the emotions of anxiety, depression, boredom, and despair, the philosophy of Sartre developed into more concrete forms and became popular around the time of World War Ⅱ. The European intellectuals who cast doubt about the rationalism of the reason through the experience of the war, began to deploy the realistic existentialism instead of Kierkegaard’s theistic existentialism. Nevertheless, they had a clear common point. All of them prioritized the independent existence of each human as an individual, instead of the universality such as truth or essence, and emphasized freedom as the potential of humanity. Freedom as the potential was deepened by Sartre who even considered existentialism itself as a tool by which the freedom of individuals could be defended. So, it was established that “existentialism is humanism.” And this existentialism extended beyond philosophy, across society, culture and politics, to the field of art. Because the philosophy of existentialism emphasized the individualistic peculiarity of each human that cannot be universalized, it corresponded well to the autonomous characteristic of art and became incorporated as part of the creative activity. Especially as it became known to several artists who took the theme of search for humanity, existentialism was established as the essential concept of human realization. A representative example is Alberto Giacometti. Giacometti realized Sartre’s consciousness called “Nothing(Néant, Nichts)” through his novel methodology in sculpture, by visualizing the transcendence of human existence, not the imitation of human form. The process of reduction, extraction, and deletion taken together with the spatial expression of “Nothing” was itself the ‘emptiness’ of human. The author takes the example of Freud, together with Giacometti. Freud too, instead of superficially depicting humans, straightforwardly realized the anxiety of human who owns a body of finitude due to existence and who has become laid bare by the gaze of others, that is, who has become being-in-itself. The two artists visualized not the universalized or generalized human essence, but the realistic appearance of the individual entities who, while nihilated(Nichtung, Nihilation), fulfil Projection(Entwurf) in the world and thus is insecure. In conclusion, however, the author argues that the two artists experienced wars in person so that their depiction of humans could be thoroughly existential. Unlike the artists who were able to establish the existential foundation for depiction of humans from the historical background of wars, the contemporary artists of the author’s time have difficulties in drawing certain inevitable background from the given environment. It is because in the modern society, no significant events of the society are given except for the common emotion of lethargy. This was the same for the author, too. The author did not find an interest or experience of other objects except for the self as human, and even then there was difficulty in understanding the self. The author, while working on self-portraits, analysed many works of others to provide the existential depiction of humans, and continued to make efforts to extract its fundamental concepts, but the resulting works could not be entirely the same as those of the previous eras. It is because the author, in expressing the negative emotions and ironies of humans, needed to find one’s own new image of humans in the different temporal and spatial environment from the previous artists. In conclusion, the author took the direction of investigating the self as a more isolated individual, in the format of self-portraits and the Third space. Clearly, through this paper the author could understand the concepts of the existential depiction of humans and its examples and tried to utilize them in applying to the own methodology. In the process, it was possible to recognize the conceptual aspects of the emotions that had been let go unexamined and to find the grounds on which the emotions were developed and applied. However, as there is a limit in any study, certain temporal distance should be acknowledged in complete conformity between this author and existentialism, a philosophy a half-century ago from the present. Clearly, the author’s works have existential foundations. But, as a human living the present, the author intends to prove the contemporariness beyond imitating the past, through more internalization of such foundations. Therefore, the author will make efforts to contain in the artworks the contemporariness in depicting human existence from the humans as ironic beings that feel anxiety out of freedom and responsibility and escape into self-deception(mauvaise foi) to the humans living the present days.
