The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing the interaction between mothers and children in preschool age and to construct a structural equation modeling based on the identified factors. In addition, the study aimed to provide basic material for seeking a nursing intervention strategy for enhancing the interaction between mothers and preschool children. A literature review was conducted based on Barnard’s (1978) Child Health Assessment Interaction Theory to select the variables that influence the interaction between preschool children and mothers in terms of three distinct factors: child-related, environment-related, and mother-related. The variables of child-related factors included gender, temperament, and self-regulation of a child. The economic status of a household and social support were selected as the variables of environment-related factors. Lastly, the variables of mother-related factors included the mother’s education level and parenting stress. The model was constructed by establishing a pathway among these variables.
The data were collected from November 30, 2019 to February 25, 2020 by distributing questionnaires to the mothers of children aged 3 to 6 years old who were enrolled in kindergartens in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Chungbuk, and Jeonbuk. A total of 328 questionnaires were used for the analysis. Analysis was performed using SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 26.0 programs.
The results of this research are as follows: 1. The goodness of fit of the final model was found to have =191.03, /df=2.77, GFI=0.94, CFI=0.96, NFI=0.94, TLI=0.94, and RMSEA=0.074, indicating an acceptable fit of the model. 2. Self-regulation of the child (β=.42, p<.001) had the most significant influence on the interaction between preschool children and mothers, followed by the mother’s parenting stress (β=-.23, p=.008), social support (β=.17, p<.001), and active temperament of the child (β=.15, p<.001). The child’s gender, emotional temperament, social temperament, and mother’s education level had indirect influences. 3. The explanatory power of variables for explaining the interaction between preschool children and mothers was found to be high at 80.0%.
In conclusion, the current study model can be evaluated as a well-substantiated model to explain Barnard’s (1978) Child Health Assessment Interaction Theory. In order to improve the interaction between pre-school children and mothers, the identified variables that influence the interaction must be mediated. An improvement in the mother-children interaction is indispensable for the healthy growth and development of children, thus based on the results of this study requiring concrete and practical plans for improving social systems to be implemented.
