ABSTRACT
A Study on the Problems and Improvement Measures of Online Performing Arts in the Post-Corona Era
Hwang, Ye-Ji Dept. of Performing Arts Management The Graduate School of culture and technology Sangmyung University
This thesis aimed to research the problems and improvements measures of online performances based on the perspective following the experiences of producing it. The ‘Post-Corona’ era has arrived. The ‘Post-Corona’ means the era when the daily life and economy are newly and socially changed after the COVID-19(hereafter, Corona 19) has passed. For this reason, in the domestic performing arts world, many private performance halls, national theaters, or large agencies are creating the ‘untact’ performance methods meaning contact-free and non-face-to-face, in the form of producing online performances and relevant image contents. Also, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism announced the 2021 budget bill strengthening the untact contents, and also carried out the Corona 19 arts forum. The production of online performances tends to be continuously increasing while the necessity of untact contents has been nationally cognized. Thus, this thesis researched the experiences of producing an online performance focusing on online performance in the Post-Corona era through the in-depth interview, and also studied its problems and improvement measures. Through the results of in-depth interview, there were largely three problems of online performances. The concrete contents are as follows. First, due to the absence of audiences, the breathes and feelings were not delivered. During the performance, the performers felt the decline of realism, immersion, and energy, and there were no methods to cope with happenings they could face in the middle of performance. It was also impossible to produce the scenes participated by audiences. Second, as a problem of platform utilization, there were problems with the function of platform itself. And the online performances with star quality were only consumed. They also said that the platform was not fully generalized yet. Third, due to the increase of low-budget online performances by the change of image media, it is highly possible to be standardized downward, and the image could become a subject instead of performance. As it became possible to reshoot the performance, the performers’ tension and vitality got lowered. There were also problems caused by differences in understanding of each area between performance producer and person related to image media, and problems with the design of existing performance halls that were not suitable for online performances. Based on such problems, this study researched total three improvement measures for online performances. First, there should be the researches on audience-centered online performance and the researches on performer-centered online performance at the same time. In the performing arts, the percentage of performers is very high, and the performers’ work satisfaction plays a great role in the creation of great performance. Thus, there should be the researches on the performer-centered methods such as the performers could see the audiences’ responses. Second, a platform suitable for online performances should be developed. It would be necessary to establish the platform equipped with functions suitable for the provision of online performance or easy-to-view classification & service for users. Third, there should be performance halls suitable for online performances. It would be necessary not only to design the performance halls for the production of various online performances, but also to modernize and develop the existing performance halls. Due to the Corona 19, the face-to-face performances could not be performed, so the online performances were conducted as its alternative. Even though the online performances were universally carried out as a newly-rising method to enjoy performing arts, there are some problems because of the absence of on-the-spotness which is the unique characteristic of performing arts. Thus, in the conclusions of this study, even though it is almost impossible to contain the on-the-spotness of face-to-face performance in online performances for now, the performing arts world was trying hard to continuously complement the problems of online performances and also to develop the new forms through interviews and researches. Thus, the budget support, operation methods, and technology shall be disseminated in accordance with the changes in the performance format. also, there should be continuous researches on online performances of performing arts as an area different from face-to-face performances. However, this study also has limitations as follows. First, this thesis conducted interviews focusing on online performance producers. Thus, this study could not collect the realistic and direct information and statistics based on the responses of actual audiences and performers, so it was not possible to discuss the problems and improvement measures based on it. Second, as a thesis focusing on a specific online performance, the results of this study cannot represent the whole online performances. Third, even though this thesis researched the improvement measures for online performances, the interviews for its verification were not performed. Thus, this study reveals that there are some tasks that should be continuously researched in the future. The significance of this study was to research the problems and improvement measures of online performances based on the experiences of producing an online performance, and also to establish better online performance environment. Thus, this study could be used as the basic data for providing realistic helps in relation to seeking for the measures for vitalizing online performances and also increasing the work satisfaction of both audiences and performing artists in the Post-Corona era.
