China and Korea have shared many cultural commonalities through geographical proximity, frequent exchanges, and the historic use of the traditional Chinese character culture.
This dissertation first identifies the general development and immersion of Western art songs in both countries. The introduction of Western art songs to China and Korea at the end of the 19th century is similar not only in terms of timing and context, but also in how each country’s traditional music was fused with Western music.
The paper then discusses the lives and musical works of two pioneers that introduced Western music in both countries, Chinese composer Qingzhu and Korean composer Hong Nan-pa. Qingzhu’s “Daegang Donggeo” and “I Live Along the Upstream of Janggang River” were compared with Hong Nan-pa’s “Bongsoonga” and “Love”. A comparative analysis examining the unique characteristics and meaning of lyrics, musical form, accompaniment, and performance techniques revealed numerous similarities of and differences between the two composers’ art songs. Here, the musical significance and the historical influence of both composers’ art songs are discussed in depth with a focus on the comparative elements of Chinese and Korean traditional art songs.
The contributions to the development of art songs that Qingzhu and Hong Nan-pa made are as follows.
First, the two composers accepted Western music in a similar fashion. Both agreed that the style of Western music was the standard to embrace and attempted to fuse it with the music of their respective country. Second, Qingzhu and Hong Nan-pa created a new type of art songs by incorporating the unique sentiments and sensibilities of their own people into Western music styles. Both composers were able to provide great consolation to their people through works that contained and inspired a sense of patriotism and independence. Third, the four works compared highlight how the two composers selected similar poetic material as lyrics and utilized analogous composition techniques.
The two pioneers embodied their artistic beliefs in close connection with the respective backgrounds and national sentiments of their time, and each became both the starting point and cornerstone of the development of modern contemporary music of his country.
