This study analyzed the relationship between sodium intake and obesity among 596 adolescents aged 10-18 out of 10,430 surveyed using raw data from the 7th Secondary Year of the National Health and Nutrition Survey (2017). The group with sodium intake of 6,000 mg or more was found to be high in energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate, calcium, phosphorus, iron, and sodium. When the correlation between nutrient intake and sodium intake was examined, energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate, calcium, phosphorus, and iron were all significantly correlated with sodium. Both the normal group and the overweight group were higher in males than in the females, and elementary school students were the highest in both the normal and overweight groups. The difference between nutrient intake and BMI group was found to have significant differences in energy, fat, carbohydrate, and sodium. In energy and carbohydrates, the intake was higher in the normal group than in the overweight group, and the fat and sodium in the overweight group turned out to be significantly higher than the normal group. In terms of nutrient factors affecting BMI, energy, fat, and sodium were found to have a significant effect on BMI in the entire BMI group. Among the BMI group, in the normal group, energy, fat, and sodium were found to have a significant effect on BMI, and in the overweight group, energy, fat, carbohydrate, and sodium were found to have a significant effect on BMI. This study supports that sodium may be a common factor in the entire BMI group, normal group, and overweight group as a mechanism that causes obesity. In order to systematically reduce sodium, various programs for nutrition education for students in elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as cooking practice and job training for educational personnel and parents should be developed.
