Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) is one of the most attractive solar cells due to its low manufacturing cost, high conversion efficiency and wide application compared conventional silicon-based solar cells. Especially, the TiO2 photoelectrode that generates photocurrent by absorbing the light is one of the most important factors in the DSSCs. It is a key point to develop the advanced photoelectrode to improve the overall performance of the DSSCs. However, the problems such as remarkably low conversion efficiency and charge recombination in the photoelectrode still remain. Also, the explanation of the relationship between the performance of the DSSCs and the electrochemical reaction is not clear. In this study, in order to improve the performance, DSSCs was modified with different approach by changing the process step and inserting the additional layers on the FTO/glass. And then, photovoltaic and electrochemical properties of TiO2-based DSSCs were evaluated by using various method, especially, solar simulator analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. First, the TiO2 photoelectrode was fabricated by changing the thickness using screen printing method. It has the tendency that the amount of dye molecules adsorbed on TiO2 increases as the thickness of the TiO2 photoelectrode increases due to the increase in the dye molecule adsorption site. The performance of DSSCs increases up to approximately 12 μm TiO2 thickness, corresponding to the tendency of the amount of dye adsorption that enables to generate the photocurrent. However, over 12 μm thickness, the TiO2 films start to break, resulting in the decrease of the performance. It was confirmed that the optimum thickness of TiO2 photoelectrode was 12 μm, which had a low charge transfer resistance. It was also confirmed that the introduction of the quenching step in TiO2 film fabrication process which can change the surface area and adsorption site during dye coating could affect the performance of the DSSCs. It was revealed that the decrease in the TiO2 particle size occurred without the changes in both the composition and crystal structure by the quenching step. After quenching step in the sintering process, DSSC performance was improved by increasing the current density according to the I-V measurement. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy indicated that internal resistance of the interface between N719/TiO2- electrolyte was decreased by increasing the amount of dye loading. As a result, an increase in the dye adsorption site by reducing the particle size of TiO2 films leads to improve the DSSC performance. It is also important to prevent the charge recombination in transparent conducting oxide (TCO)-electrolyte interface and to enhance the transport in TCO-TiO2 photoelectrode interface in the point of improving the performance of DSSCs. A TiO2 compact layer was deposited on the FTO/glass substrate by using TiCl4 aqueous solution. The optimal conditions in TiCl4 post treatment to improve the performance was 30 min TiCl4 treatment, showing ~17% increase in photo conversion efficiency compared with the reference sample. AC impedance spectra indicated that the charge transfer resistance was decreased due to two effects of the TiO2 compact layer. The electron lifetimes of the sample with the 30 min treatment TiO2 compact layer was improved compared with the reference sample. The patterned-TiO2 compact layers were fabricated to distinguish the effects of TiO2 compact layer. The effect of blocking the charge recombination is dominant than that of improving the electron transport through I-V photovoltaic properties.
