The present study was conducted to identify and resolve the causes of dew condensation in unheated spaces, as the occurrence rate of dew condensation is increasing in unheated spaces of apartment houses. The temperature and humidity were measured in houses that were being used for residence, and the lifestyle of the residents was also investigated. The main causes of dew condensation in the unheated spaces were identified by measuring the temperature and humidity and analyzing the residents’ daily life pattern, and the time when dew condensation occurs was also found. In addition, a simulation was performed with unheated spaces to identify the parameters that determine the temperature of the spaces. Finally, a formula to calculate the temperature of unheated spaces was derived to predict dew condensation.
The results of the present study are summarized below.
First, with the increase of the occurrence rate of dew condensation in winter in unheated spaces of apartment houses, the policies or solutions to resolve the dew condensation were surveyed in Korea. However, Korea has no relevant policies or solutions, while some other countries have regulations to calculate the temperature of unheated spaces. The review of the applicability of the overseas regulations showed that they may not be appropriately applied to Korea because of the differences in the heating methods, the resident’s life pattern, and the positions of unheated spaces in apartment houses.
Second, to investigate the occurrence rate of dew condensation in unheated spaces of apartment houses in Korea, measurement was performed in winter by visiting houses that were actually used for residence. The outdoor temperature, outdoor humidity, indoor temperature, indoor humidity, temperature of unheated spaces, and humidity of unheated spaces were measured in 210 houses throughout Korea. The measurement results showed that the residents maintained constant indoor temperature and humidity regardless of the outdoor temperature. The results also showed that the temperature and humidity conditions in the balcony on the north side and the evacuation space, which are unheated spaces, were significantly different from those of the other spaces. The analysis of the measurements showed that the occurrence rate of dew condensation in unheated spaces was high between 0 to 7 o’clock, and the high occurrence rate of dew condensation is attributed to the resident’s life pattern and the outdoor temperature.
Third, a simulation was performed with a model having the same shape as that of the houses where the measurement was performed. The simulation involved parameters that can affect the temperature of the unheated spaces, including the outdoor temperature, area, window performance, life pattern of occupants, and the amount of air infiltration. The results showed that the outdoor temperature, the amount of air infiltration, and the life pattern of occupants are critical factors to the temperature of the unheated spaces. The simulation also revealed that the area of the unheated spaces and the heat transmission performance of windows have little effects on the temperature of the unheated spaces.
Fourth, a formula to calculate the temperature of unheated spaces was derived by using the measurements and the simulation results so as to be applicable to Korea. Due to the absence of an available formula to calculate the temperature of unheated spaces in Korea, a formula was developed by employing the approximate method shown in an overseas reference material (DIN V 18599). A temperature correction factor is an important constant in the formula for the approximate method, while the factor is 0.5 for unheated spaces. Therefore, to establish temperature correction factors suitable for Korea, the temperature correction factors for the balcony on the north side and the evacuation space were derived by analyzing the temperature and humidity measurements from the 210 houses throughout Korea according to the regions and time slots.
The results of the present study may be used to calculate the temperature of the unheated spaces of apartment houses in Korea. The formula derived in the present study may be used to calculate the temperature of the unheated spaces to predict the dew condensation and prepare plans to reduce the occurrence rate of dew condensation.
