Oh Sang-won, a postwar-generation Korean novelist, is a highly acclaimed writer in characteristic techniques and expressions of character consciousness. He recreated Korean society through existentialism and humanism in his novels. Oh Sang-won and other novelists of the 1950s are limited in their interpretation and evaluation within the postwar generation. The works of other writers, including him in the 1950s are evaluated and interpreted limited to post-war times. In particular, the originality of creative techniques was frequently mentioned about Oh Sang-won, but the study of creative techniques itself was relatively insufficient. However, the post-war generation was a generation that worked hard to discover new creative methods to overcome the old habits of older generation writers, especially Oh Sang-won, who presented ‘attitude’ and ‘trick’ as a difference from them. This implies that Oh Sang-won's sense of realism and activism applied not only to the expression of ideas but also to the technical aspects. This paper focuses on the dramatic and cinematic techniques of Oh Sang-won's novels, noting the similarity of technique between Oh Sang-won's novels and film noir. In Chapter 2, the similarities between the two subjects were analyzed in the period and genre. Film Noir is a genre of Hollywood movies that appeared in the 1940s, showing human alienation and solitude against the backdrop of capitalism, crime groups, the Great Depression, and the post-war reality. Hollywood film Noir came into the Korea in the 1950s after the Korean War armistice, and later influenced the Korean Noir and thriller genre through acceptance and transformation, and even Korean blockbuster films in the long run. This was the time he was involved in creative activities and applied cinematic techniques to his works. So the genre customs of film noir are revealed in Oh Sang-won's novel. They include the characteristics of men and women, the use of crime and violence, and the gloomy background of the city and so on. In Chapter 3, I analyzed the film noir techniques in Oh Sang-won's representative short story, 「Crack」, 「Revolt」, and 「Deferment」. Descriptions, portrayal, and narratives, the literary elements that make up the novel, were analyzed through the elements of the visual media, Montage, miseenscene, and Narrative respectively. In the middle of this analysis process, the technique of Oh Sang-won's novel was found to match the film noir technique. The flow of consciousness and point-of-view mix was similar to the montage technique, the use of light and shade. And the speed of the scene were similar to the components of miseenscene, and the conflict structure and monologue were similar to the narratives, too. Such an analysis may not prove a strong technical connection between Oh Sang-won's novel and Film Noir. Nevertheless, some significance could be found by considering the subject. First, it was confirmed that Oh Sang-won's novel creation technique tried a new way of reproducing reality by utilizing a specific genre of film techniques, moving away from the existing view of the literary world to the descriptive novelty of the new generation writers. Second, the study could be a case of cultural negotiation research in the 1950s when Western culture began to be actively embraced by the Korean public beyond the limitations of the existing post-war literature study, which was focused on expressing the trauma of division and war. Finally through this study, I explore there is a possibility that people familiar with the genre customs of Film Noir can read Oh Sang-won's novels in a new way. Then I expect film noir techniques can be accepted in a reading way to readers today.
