In contemporary art, the Biennale serves to communicate discourses, share cultures, unite politically. With the advent of the era of globalization, the political role of the biennale has become stronger. The Biennale has dramatically expanded the field of contemporary art by actively responding to changing times and providing related art experiences that reflect social changes. Until now, Biennale has been studied with regard to topics such as institutional criticism, globalization, and political instrumentalization, but this study has focused on the festivity of Biennale in the perspective of a viewer and examined the significance and positive aspects of Biennale in contemporary art. Through Mikhail Bakhtin's Carnival theory, this study identified the relationship between Biennale and carnival is identified with regard to liberation from taboo, and sought to understand the concept and aesthetics of Carnival, which are characterized by "People's Humorous Laughter, Grotesque Realism, Subversive Dialogue." Based on this, we examined the ‘Carnivalesque’ in the 58th Venice Biennale, which was held most recently. In the 58th Venice Biennale, there were many works on issues of the times, especially racial issues, women, refugees, disabilities, sexual minorities, the Third World, and the environment. Considering the characteristics of art that reflect the spirit of the times, the 58th Venice Biennale broadened our views of the world, solved community problems together, and drew creative solidarity that gained the power of creation. Ralph Lugoff, the general director of the exhibition, declared the 58th Venice Biennale, hoping that the audience would take with them the energy and experiences of the exhibition to confront the reality and expand their views of the world. By opening the exhibition, Lugoff expected and intended to understand the world through interaction and coexistence. The participants in the carnival are not independent of them. They become the subject of communication and actively enjoy the carnival in making relationships between individuals, individuals and works, works and works, and individuals and Biennale. The 58th Venice Biennale is a site where the voices of the alienated are freely expressed and the active interactions occur between audiences, the audience and the works, the audience and the biennale, and even between the nations. This research analyzed the aesthetic aspects of the biennale which represent people’s consciousness through art and tried to shed light on the role of art that the biennale should play in today's society. In order for Biennale to show and sustain the original characteristics of the art festival of pursuing the liberation of existence, rather than remaining an authoritative institution, more cases need to be analyzed.
