This study focuses on audiobooks which I think is an alternative that can revitalize reading culture, which has stagnated in the age of mechanical reproduction as various forms of other media has appeared, causing the market for traditional media to decrease. There was a problem of a lack of research on audiobook users, as electronic publishing of audiobooks became more popular in the domestic market. In particular, I focused on audiobooks that could be classified as modern/contemporary or classics, and the individual media history of the users who listened to them. I explored the characteristics and usage characteristics of audiobooks according to Benjamin’s concept of the collapse of aura in the age of mechanical reproduction and borrowed theoretically from the thoughts of Spinoza and Deleuze on affectus. I explored the aura in traditional artwork in Benjamin’s reason on the collapse of aura and the reason of the distractions of users in the age of mechanical reproduction. I also explored the idea of parallelism between body and emotion in Spinoza’s thoughts on affectus, and studied Deleuze, who made it a philosophical model. This study is set up to study the three flows: user’s affectus experience, turning point, and individual media life through literary audiobooks, and has set the research question in accordance. I examined the new paradigm of reading experience and, as content, the audiobook market, by studying in detail why they started using audiobooks and the experience when used. Research participants were mainly selected from those who mainly used audiobooks to listen to literary works. I used the Bowling research method, and additionally applied Mandelbaum’s life history research framework to analyze the meaningful experiences derived from the participant’s certain experiences in order to examine the different experiences of participants using audiobooks by time and life history. The results analyzed through thorough interviews with the participants are as follows. First, on how participants came to use audiobooks, participants were used to the convenience that comes with digital device and came to use audiobooks because of individual preference or curiosity about an audiobook reader, and to accumulate different reading experiences. Most participants were familiar with the convenience of digital devices, and there were many cases where they started looking favorably on audiobooks due to personal preference and attractiveness on an audiobook reader’s voice. Second, on what kinds of affectus change and turning points they experienced while using literary audiobooks, there were those who emotionally changed either passively or actively. Particularly, participants who showed experience of active use would get help in their lives just from the reader’s voice and would follow the reader’s voice, actively changing his mental state by recording his own voice and making a simple audiobook. Lastly, on what kind of meaning participants acquired and adapted into their lives from using audiobooks, they were getting healed emotionally through the reader’s voice when playing literary audiobooks. However, the current domestic market is mainly dominated by famous actors, this could limit the development of the audiobook market so a solution must be found for this. Audiobooks function as a new avenue to solve the urgent need for revitalization in reading culture that accompanied the stagnation of the traditional publication market. The diffusion and development of audiobook publishing could be the adaptation of publishing culture to the age of mechanical reproduction and could be presented as an alternative possibility for affectus as it is a different reading experience. I expect this study, which in social practice, analyzed the affectus experience and media biography of literary audiobook users to be to be useful theoretically and practically.
