The purpose of this study is to examine the life of a single kindergarten teacher, explore her experience as a teacher, and highlight the difficulties she faced as a teacher. For this purpose, the researcher set the following study questions; 1. What is the experience of the study participant as a kindergarten teacher? For this study, the researcher included one teacher who is currently working at a child education institution. The research participant is an eight-year career teacher who has had a long relationship with the researcher and can talk about his or her life. The study was conducted using in-depth interviews, which was one of the study methods for qualitative studies. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the researcher had nine separate interview sessions over a period of six months from April to September 2020. Then, including one further interview to the said nine sessions, the researcher ultimately completed ten in-depth interview sessions with the participant. Based on the situation of the study participant, the researcher made appointments for interviews in advance. And, due to the COVID-19 situation, the researcher had six in-person interviews and four non-contact, Zoom sessions. The interview was conducted in the form of a conversation. And, depending on the answers given by the participant, the researcher shared her own experience as the interview proceeded. During the interview, the researcher used recordings and field notes, which were transcribed and analyzed to gather the data. The data so gathered were given themes and categorized to be endowed with meanings. The findings of this study were as follows; First, the participant in the study had a lot of experience in child-care institutions of different types. The first institution the participant worked for was a private kindergarten, where she worked as an assistant teacher during her first year in her career. Even though she started working as an assistant teacher, she was not given the opportunities to work with the children and learn from the regular teachers, as her duties usually involved working the garden, cleaning, making jam, or guiding the children in vehicles, etc. While working at a public kindergarten, she worked as an after-school teacher under a termed contract for eight hours. She worked here for a total of one year, after renewing her contract every six months. Here, she worked as the after-school teacher for the three-year-old children for six months and for another six months as the home-room teacher for the four-year-old children. During this period, she had the opportunity to interact with the teachers of the public kindergarten, learning a lot from them. There, she did not experience being ignored or discriminated against because she did not pass the kindergarten teacher’s license exam. However, the participant took several hits to her self-esteem as the director ordered the participant to do things that were not the jobs of a teacher or sometimes ignored her. In a college-affiliated kindergarten, which was affiliated with the university that the participant attended, she experienced a stronger sense of security as she worked as a teacher. While this allowed her to learn the things that she has been doing in the kindergarten, such as the portfolio, there were the teachers who have been working for many years. From these teachers, the participant learned about class teaching skills, parent consultation, and preparing for activities, as well as teacher researches. The participant believes that the experience she gained during this period served as the foundation for her to grow as a teacher. While it was true that she learned a lot in this place, the atmosphere there was discouraging and compromising the morale of the teachers. Also, the university-affiliated kindergarten, which was also a type of private kindergarten, had a system in which the experience of the teacher gained at other kindergarten was not recognized. As a result, the participant felt she was not being treated fairly. Lastly, the workplace daycare center, of which the participant had the most experience, could have been a similar environment. However, the experience there was different. There was a child-abuse incident in the kindergarten that she worked for, and she saw the managers and teachers being replaced in the aftermath of the incident. And, it was a stressful time for her, as well, as people called her ‘the teacher from the kindergarten where there was a child abuse.’ However, she was again inspired by her peer teachers, parents, and children, and it strengthened her as a teacher. The workplace daycare center where she is currently working also had hardships ready for her. However, she overcomes these difficulties and is now doing well, seeing such difficulties as good opportunities to grow. Second, a kindergarten teacher experiences various human relationships over her career. The participant had various experiences with the managers she met as she worked in a total of seven different child education institutions. A manager she met in one of the workplace daycare centers did not trust the teachers and even suspected them. One manager in one of her institutions ordered her to do things that were not appropriate for a teacher. However, some managers provided support and advice to the participant whenever they had a chance. These helped her to grow for herself by utilizing the advantages of being a teacher. The participant thought she wanted to become a teacher like these managers, and this motivated her to work harder to improve herself as a teacher. Also, she met a variety of parents. She sometimes had a difficult time due to the parents who judged the teacher based on their impression of the children and trying to make complaints or point fingers. Also, some parents asked their children, “Who teased you today” or “Who refused to play with you today?” And, based on the answers to these questions, they judged the teacher and complained that the teacher was not paying enough attention to their children, which disillusioned her about being a teacher. However, there were also other parents who appreciated the slightest attention paid by the teacher and expressed their thanks. As the participant prepared her activities online due to the pandemic or made efforts for the children in other ways, some of the parents made the participant feel proud by saying her “Thank you very much for these preparations for the children, even though it must not be easy to do all this while wearing a mask.” Lastly, it is about the experience with her peer teachers with whom she worked every day. When there was a child-abuse incident, and she felt stressed due to the criticism aimed at the teachers, some peer teachers supported her so that she could continue her path as a teacher. In addition, some peer teachers helped her by sharing her work burden when she was overwhelmed by her workload as the administrative teacher and sometimes even doing her share of work instead so that she could stay on her career path with even more enthusiasm. Third, children are the reason why a kindergarten teacher exists. The most important experience of the participant in her career was her experience with the children. Not only the participant but also all kindergarten teachers study and work hard at all times for their children. They always show their love to their children, pay attention to them, and continuously communicate with them. As a result, the children get more used to expressing their love and absorb what is prepared and supported by the participants so that they could grow. The participant encountered children with difficulties in linguistic development, children suffering from insufficient social skills and many other children of different types. However, some are successfully growing due to the efforts of the participant. Fourth, it is the growing reality of the kindergarten teachers that the participant experienced. The participant experienced the reality of the kindergarten teachers as she worked for multiple child education institutions. She had difficulties in noticing subtle changes, let alone playing with all of them, due to the high students per teacher ratio. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many children were staying at home, which reduced the number of students per teacher. As a result, both the teachers and the students had a fun time with less stress. Also, she experienced some cases in which she had to work during the break times, while she also had to work more hours due to her workload. This made a realize the challenges for a kindergarten teacher. Lastly, the participant experienced the ‘emotional labor’ due to the difficult feelings he had because of the parents, peer teachers, and managers, as a part of the difficulties she had to go through. Also, the participant discussed the poor treatment of the teachers compared to the demanding work burden.
