The purpose of this study is to investigate the job stress experienced by child-care teachers as the childcare environment of daycare centers changes due to COVID-19. To this end, the job stress of child-care teachers experienced in the COVID-19 situation was compared and analyzed with the job stress experience before COVID-19. According to the purpose of this study, the following research question was selected.
Rearch Question 1. What is the job stress experience of child-care teachers due to changes in the childcare environment caused by COVID-19?
In this study, child-care teachers at daycare centers who voluntarily agreed to participate were selected as participants. Teachers with at least 5 years of teaching experience were selected as participants to investigate the changes in job stress experience due to changes in the childcare environment before and after COVID-19. Interviews with study participants took place from the last week of September to the second week of October 2020. As a result of the interview analysis, the main causes of job stress in the childcare environment before the COVID-19 were co-workers and directors, working hours, lack of rest, and relationships with parents. However, after COVID-19, it was found that the prevention of infectious diseases or changes in the childcare environment caused by infectious diseases caused a lot of job stress. After COVID-19, causes of job stress were social distancing, increased work related to quarantine, feeling sorry due to activity restrictions, and concerns about unemployment. Detailed results are as follows. First, current child-care teachers were experiencing job stress regarding difficulties in social distancing during working hours, inconvenient wearing masks, inability to practice social distancing for infants and toddlers, and increasing work due to distance from parents to prevent infectious diseases of COVID-19. Second, child-care teachers were experiencing job stress due to the burden of work due to the addition of quarantine work, child health status check, hygiene of infants and toddlers, and management work for children who are absent for the safety. Third, child-care teachers felt sorry about when infants and toddlers enter daycare centers, they cannot engage in activities outside to prevent infectious diseases and have to sped time based on social distancing in the classroom. In addition, it was found that the anxiety and fear of infection among infants and toddlers with emergency care were high, and even anxiety about unemployment was felt due to the decrease in children. In summary, it was confirmed that the childcare environment of the daycare centers where child-care teachers are currently working due to COVID-19 is experiencing many changes. In particular, the factors that induce job stress in child-care teachers were completely changing compared to those before COVID-19. Based on these results, this study has implications in that it provided basic data necessary to search for a reduction plan by examining the difficulties and job stress experienced by child-care teachers who are caring for infants and toddlers amid the proliferation of COVID-19, which is expected to be prolonged in the future.
