A Study of Mission Contact Point of Korean Immigrants in the Country through Their Practical Issues and Expectations

Immigrant mission has become a great renaissance and growth within Korean churches. At the same time, however, it’s facing an unprecedented problem. Local churches are struggling with stagnancy and decreasing faith, and such issues are hindering missions. Consequently, further research and measures for immigrant mission are in demand. This research method uses speculation and qualitative measures. The targets of the research are immigrants residing in Korea, and the research studied personal interviews with 43 individuals from two places used for collecting data: Da SaRang culture center in Incheon and World Mission Church in Gwangju, Gyeonggido. The result of the research is as follows. I aim to suggest implementing a sense of importance of mission for Koreans residing in the country and to suggest the mission contact point as four parts. First, an educational center for teaching Korean is necessary. While 1.5 generation Korean immigrants can somewhat understand what they hear, they have a highly difficult time speaking what they need to say in Korean. Although the government tries to use public welfare institutions to teach Korean, results are extremely short of improvements. As a result, local churches should execute Korean education. Secondly, bible study is needed. The reason why faith in salvation is fading is that definite education of the Christian fundamentality, the gospel, is weak. In order to solve this, we can use simplified versions of Christian questionnaires and lectures to teach more effectively. Thirdly, professional minister is in need. To understand their language and culture and transform them to people of gospel, one needs more than simply passion. We need a minister who gives consistent care and a feeling of belonging to its members. Fourth is consistent union with the local church. Local churches coexist with immigrants and share their culture and lives, making their effective ministry is highly important.
The following is the suggested application of the research. Firstly, we need to spread proper gospel to Korean immigrants. We need to teach them how to live as Christians and help their faith become stable through complete knowledge of gospel. Education in eliminating and defying heresy is also needed. Secondly, we need to visit these individuals with love. These immigrants who are facing discrimination in this country need understanding more than anything else. We need to build an active relationship that matches their eye level. Thirdly, medical costs should be lowered and certain benefits should be given. While citizens of one nation, most of these immigrants take so-called “3D” jobs that expose them to severe fatigue and illnesses. These individuals suffering from physical difficulties absolutely need medical benefits. Lastly, Korean immigrant mission needs a platform of Korean language education. From now on, usage of Korean language should be expanded through establishment of scholarships and institutions. Instead of relying on others to take on this responsibility, it is crucial that we begin this ourselves and help them listen to gospel.
