This study was an attempt to present a teaching-learning method that would allow teachers and students an opportunity to experience a new type of physical education class(artistic gymnastics) different from what their previous experiences have been. For this, a total of 103 students in J area, including one teacher and 59 third graders in H middle school, one P.E. teacher with a career as a gymnast, 28 first graders and 16 third graders in B middle school, participated in the study. In order to develop a mat exercise program, we first took a look at the difficulties felt by P.E. teachers in the operation of artistic gymnastics classes through literature analysis. Then, five experts(an artistic gymnastics coach, two physical education teachers, and two physical education doctors) developed a mat exercise program through consultation using 12 recognized middle school physical education, the rules for scoring gymnastics (FIG), and the K-Gym Star program developed by the Korea Gymnastics Association. The mat exercise program was conducted in two classes at B and H middle schools during the first semester from April to July 2020, and drew the following conclusions based on analysis of the results. First, a literature analysis of the difficulties experienced by teachers due to the operation of artistic gymnastics classes revealed that it was due to factors such as the teacher, the students, and the facility-environment. Specifically, the teacher's factors included concerns about safety accidents, negative perceptions, lack of interest, lack of leadership(assistance, demonstration, etc.), lack of experience, and lack of educational materials. The student factors included a lack of interest, repulsive attitude, lack of physical strength, lack of confidence, fear of injury, and lack of pre-learning. Facilities and environmental factors included insufficient equipment and difficulties in moving equipment.
Second, after implementing the first class(9 periods), with the mat exercise program, the teacher said that he was able to solve many of the operational difficulties in class and the students also showed positive changes. Specifically, by applying level-based classes and game-type mat exercise programs, the teacher first eliminated the negative thoughts about artistic gymnastics lessons and became more interested in educational materials, overcame the usual burden and difficulty of teaching due to lack of experience, and lack of leadership (assistance, demonstration, etc.), and was able to eliminate concerns about safety accidents. In addition, students showed high interest in the mat exercise program and recognized that their physical strength, agility, quickness, balance, and adjustment skills have improved. On the other hand, unsatisfactory and problems such as lack of practice time, reduction of actual learning time, lack of individual feedback, lack of diverse technical movements, inadequacy of difficulty, lack of awareness about the necessity for gymnastics, lack of motivation, and lack of challenging thinking and confidence in the early stages were found.
Third, the second lesson(10 periods) was reconstructed and implemented after correcting and supplementing problems in first class. As a result, teachers were able to significantly reduce the difficulties of artistic gymnastics lessons that they felt in the first lesson and were more confident in running classes more safely and enjoyably. Specifically, the lack of practice time was resolved through the expansion of class time in the second period, and the problem of the lack of actual study time and the difficulty due to lack of instruction such as demonstration, explanation, and feedback was solved by arranging and utilizing tablet PCs for each station. Also, students were able to resolve problems such as lack of awareness, lack of motivation, and lack of challenging thinking and confidence in the early stages of learning through presented video media(athletes, successful videos, etc.). And by reconstructing the program content system, such as adjusting the difficulty level of ‘Passing though with open legs after a forward roll’ action in Group 2 and adding the ‘two-step’ action in Group 4, the lack of technical movement and the inadequacy of difficulty were able to be resolved. However, it was found that students did not have enough opportunities to participate in more competitions and did not have sufficient time to practice. Therefore, it is considered that an operational strategy is necessary to improve the efficiency of the program operation, such as the application of the block time system.
Fourth, The final developed mat exercise program consists of 53 actions, consisting of a total of 4 groups such as balancing, rolling, jumping & turning, and specifically presented the objectives, contents, methods, and evaluation elements associated with each group's performances and significance points when teaching. In addition, this program made the operation of classes possible by applying various variational game methods, peer teaching models, cooperative learning models, sports education models, and so on. In particular, by configuring classes by level-based lessons that consider the level of learners and self-directed learning centered on learners, students could experience various movements and develop confidence by selecting unique acting that suits their level, and increase interest, fun, and satisfaction in classes. Therefore, it is expected that the mat exercise program will be a material that will help teachers to relieve the burden or difficulties of artistic gymnastics classes, students to raise positive awareness and to reduce repulsive attitude about a mat exercise.
