Stomatal conductance (gs, mmol m-2 s-1) is one of the critical factors to understand crop growth. gs can express the biotic and abiotic plant stresses. In abnormal condition, such as drought, insects or disease, gs getting lower. These stresses affect the gas exchange in the stomata, which affects the leaf surface energy balance, crop growth, and yield. Knowing gs make us recognize and predict crop conditions. Therefore, the time series analysis of gs is necessary for the quick detection of abnormal crop condition in smart-farming system but there are some limitations to measure gs quickly and easily. One of the crop indices closely related to gs, the Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI) is suggested to detect the water stress of crops in 1980s. CWSI is based on the leaf energy balance, this basically related to leaf temperature based on stomata open and close. As recent technology has been developed, leaf temperature can be easily observed by thermal camera or infrared thermometer, etc. I assume that there is any relationship between CWSI and gs because both has something in common: leaf temperature. As the assumption, I trying to find out possibility of estimation of gs using CWSI which is based on thermal image. In this study, I try to figure out the relationship between gs and CWSI by data collection from previous studies and numerical simulation based on physical equations using observed meteorological data as input parameters. As a result, there is negative linear relationship between CWSI and gs, and slope of relationship was determined by maximum stomatal conductance (gs_max). Based on both studies, field observation was demonstrated to evaluate relationship under field conditions. In field observation, I have been tested various methods and tested a novel method used as reference temperature. Observed reference temperature was compared with calculated reference temperature based on physical equations. In a series of processes, I figure out there is a negative linear correlation between CWSI and gs. When this correlation could be expressed a simple linear regression, this will enable continuous CWSI calculation and gs estimation. Furthermore, this will contribute to not only monitoring of crop stress for irrigation scheduling in smart farm system but also estimating evapotranspiration, photosynthesis, and crop yield of target cops
