Clowns are comic performers who give us laughter and a character that constantly inspire us, and is a common feature in many fields such as art, culture, and commerce today. In particular, it has reflected the desires and needs of the public through various appearances and roles in movies, TV, advertisements, and music. In addition to various fields, the clown in today’s modern fashion is connected with the aesthetics of designers, and appears differently as a visual expression method differentiated from the classic image. In this study, a theoretical system was created based on historical data on the image of clowns reflecting the times and applied to modern fashion to analyze the expressive characteristics and meaning. The results of the study are as follows. Firstly, the expressive characteristics of the clown image in contemporary fashion were classified into playfulness, double meaning, demonicity, and decadence. Among these characteristics of the clown, playfulness is exaggerated, reduced, and distorted in costume, body, items, and satirical messages using the clown motifs, ridiculous walking and walking speed, esoteric performances, mischievous sexual allusions, and imitation of high-class culture. Secondly, double meaning is the simultaneous image of revealed ego and symbolic ego through masks made of various materials such as split face makeup, transparent PVC and knit material masks, genderless pursuit through ambiguous expression of gender identity, combining of concepts at both extremes, and eccentric emotions. The coexistence of these elements is intriguing aspects and this makes it possible to interpret double meaning as well as equivocality. Thirdly, the demonic nature is combined with images of gods, deaths, animals, half-humans, evil spirits, and skeletons. These images are expressed by items of various materials that replaced the whiteface makeup, horns that symbolize the devil, clown masks with spike studs, conveying aggression and anxiety. performances can also include shocking and thrilling acts with background music to manifest the image of a subordinate of the devil. Fourthly, decadentness appears as a rebellious message thrown into the moral code of society, exposure of the naked body, avant-garde through indirect exposure of sexual parts, sadism, abusive language and slander, and messages that promote corruption. Forms of pursuing of pleasure such as comsuming drugs and alcohol have also appeared as stimulating colors of makeup, decoration of items, and overall erotic images. The meaning of the clown image according to the expressive characteristics was revealed as the overthrow of moral codes and social conventions, and the liberation of the suppressed human mind and emotions. Firstly, it appears that the overthrow of moral codes and social customs turns everything, including social class, by clowns ridiculously imitating and satirizing the upper class attire of each period. This is taken by masking the moral codes and common customs of society, which are previously required by the public, and obtaining anonymity under disguise. Under the anonymity, This research for thesis contributes on behalf of minority that show the pluralism and decomposition of the present age, breaking away from the existing dualistic standards. Second, the liberation of the suppressed human mind and emotions is a catharsis of surrogate satisfaction through clowns face painting, various fashion items and directing methods, and fashion performances, which are related to fear, aggression, sexuality, and demonicity. As with clowns in history, fashion messages related to the socially underprivileged and weak were projected onto the body and clothing through clowns image. This means that the clown image is an attractive material that does not have limits in expressing various emotions of human beings, and is significant in that it plays an active part as a healer and agent for all human groups. In conclusion, it can be seen that in fashion, the clown image is used as an experimental design, diversification and creative material by fashion designers’ unique and creative values, and continues to this day. In addition to the classic clown image, the development of media and changes in the ideology of the times are transformed and combined into new modern fashion items, enabling new styles and interpretations. Above all, it is the core of this study to reveal that clowns, widely known as an entertaining feature, performs social, cultural, and political functions, exhibits various characteristics such as double meaning, demonic, and decadent, and can be used as a medium for conveying meaningful fashion messages. After conducting through research for this thesis of clowns theoretical background, it can be said that clowns have multiple characteristics and meaning beyond the traditiona sense of happiness and joy. The significance of this study is that it comprehensively summarizes the clown’s history and the creative narrative expressed in popular culture, the development of ideology and media, and the clown that has developed according to the object of appeal. In addition, the contemporary fashion in the image of clowns will have a material expandability that reflects a wider variety of tastes, including minority groups, along with the designer’s sensibility and values. The results of this research are expected to be data that can present the basic direction of clown research in fields such as fashion design, stage costume design, and visual design.
