The study was performed to investigate the relationship among exercise habits and health-related lifestyle factors, dietary behavior, dietary habit, and depression in college students. A total of 566 college students (269 males, 297 females) in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do areas were divided into no-exercise group, 1~2 times/week exercise group, and over 3 times/week exercise group according to sex and exercise status, and analyzed health-related lifestyle factors, dietary behavior, dietary habit, and depression through the survey. The questionnaire was made of general characteristics, healthy lifestyle, health interest, dietary behavior, dietary habit, weight control behavior, and depression. The data were statistically analyzed using SPSS (Version 21.0, SPSS Inc. Chicago, IL, USA) program. The average age of the subjects was 23.2 years in males and 22.0 years in females, and the BMI was 21.9 kg/m2in no-exercise group, 22.7 kg/m2in 1~2 times/week exercise group, and 22.9 kg/m2 in over 3 times/week exercise group. For healthy lifestyle habits, daily exercise time(p<0.001) and nutrition supplement intake (sports drink, protein beverage & powder, vitamin A, vitamin B complex, vitamin C, iron supplement, calcium supplement) were higher in over 3 times/week exercise group compared to no-exercise group, and the frequency of alcohol drinking was higher in no-exercise group compared to over 3 times/week exercise group (p<0.001). For subjective health status, it was perceived as good in males compared to females, over 3 times/week exercise group compared to no-exercise group (p<0.05), and the health interest was higher in females compared to males (p<0.05), over 3 times/week exercise group than in no-exercise group (p<0.001). For dietary behaviors, daily meal frequency(p<0.01), breakfast frequency(p<0.01), and meal regularity(p<0.001) were high in over 3 times/week exercise group, and the important meal was lunch(p<0.01). In no-exercise group, picky-eating(p<0.001) and overeating (p<0.01) were high and the important meal was dinner (p<0.01). Daily food intake frequency was high in meat(p<0.01), fruits(p<0.01), dairy products(p<0.01), seaweed(p<0.01), and water(p<0.001) as the frequency of exercise was high. Depression score was low in males compared to females, over 3 times/week exercise group compared to no-exercise group (p<0.01). The effective method of weight control was exercise in males (p<0.001) and decrease of the food amount (p<0.001), Korean herbal medicine (p<0.05), prescribed medication (p<0.01) in females. The effective method of weight control was exercise in over 3 times/week exercise group (p<0.01) and at least 24-hour fasting in no-exercise group (p<0.05). The correlations among BMI, interest in health, depression, factor 1 (grain, meat, vegetable, fruit, dairy product, seaweed, water intake), and factor 2 (greasy food, sweet food, carbonated beverage, processed food, salty and spicy food, caffeine intake) according to exercise frequency were investigated. In no-exercise group, the health interest and factor 1 showed significantly positive correlation (p<0.01), and depression and factor 2 showed significantly positive correlation (p<0.05). Factor 1 and factor 2 showed significantly positive correlation (p<0.001). In 1~2 times/week exercise group, the health interest and factor 1 showed significantly positive correlation (p<0.05), and depression and factor 2 showed significantly positive correlation (p<0.05). Factor 1 and factor 2 showed significantly positive correlation (p<0.01). In over 3 times/week exercise group, BMI and the health interest showed significantly positive correlation (p<0.01), the health interest and factor 1 showed significantly positive correlation (p<0.01). From the above results, students with frequent regular exercise were highly interested in health, maintained desirable dietary habits, and showed lower depression score. Thus, combined intervention including exercise habit, proper dietary habit and depression management will be necessary for effective health management. It is also considered that national support measures are needed to develop various programs and exercise practice education plans to reduce depression in college students, which can be continuously maintained throughout the adulthood.
