This thesis is a study on the life and career of Songeun Yi Byeong-jik(松隱 李秉直, 1896∼1973), a painter and collector from the Japanese colonial era to the 1970s. Yi Byeongjik was born in Hongcheon, Gangwon-do in 1896, and at the age of 7, 1903, was adopted by the Yeonyang-gun family. The Yeonyang-gun family, descendants of the progenitor Yi Gye-han, prospered for generations as the head of the eunuch department. Although he didn’t serve as a eunuch due to the system’s abolishment in 1908, he lived a prosperous life with the family’s enormous inheritance. After he joined the Research Association of Calligraphy and Painting(書畫硏究會) in 1915, he studied calligraphy under the instruction of Kim Kyu-jin. He was the first graduate who completed all the curriculum of the association in 1918. His major career as a painter was his winning 13 prizes at Joseon Art Exhibition in the colonization era. Also, as an invited artist and judge, he had participated in the Korean Art Exhibition for 17 years after Korea regained independence in 1945. Many of his works are about ‘bamboo painting’ and ‘orchid panting’ which his instructor Kim Kyu-jin mainly depicted. The theme of his works are classified into the early and later period around the 1940s. The early works were exhibited at the Joseon Art Exhibition, and as ‘Haegangnanjukbo(海岡蘭竹譜)’ reveals, these painting with bamboo and orchid shows the influence of Kim Kyu-jin. His later works submitted to the Korean Art Exhibition were designed not only according to Kim Kyu-jin’s bamboo painting but also introduced the technique of Min Youn-gik (閔泳翊)’s orchid painting, which had been influenced by the Shanghai painting. Yi Byeongjik’s works are categorized into the early and the later period and the style change and patterns are analyzed. From the Japanese colonial era to modern Korea, he had continued to depict bamboo and orchid in ink painting technique. Thus, his works represent the changing patterns of modern Sagunja paintings and the influence of newly introduced foreign cultures on domestic artists. Yi Byung-jik is one of the art collectors representing the modern era. By communicating with famous collectors of the time, he attempted to collect various artworks. His collection covers various field such as calligraphy, ceramics, and crafts, and it includes masterpieces of Kim Jeong-hee(秋史 金正喜) and Jang Seung-up (吾園 張承業), and the national treasure such as 『Samguk yusa(三國遺事)』. By exhibiting his collections in a various antique art exhibition, Yi Byeong-jik started public activities in the 1930s. Most of his collections were sold through auctions in 1937, 1941, and 1950. In this study, anecdotes and conversations confirmed in newspapers, magazines, and memoirs regarding him were comprehensively studied. Based on the research, his career as a collector was analyzed. His collection trend was also studied through his collections. His career and collection trends as a collector can be confirmed by comparing the collection trends of modern art collectors with various aspects of the antique art market.
