As the demand and interest of the Internet of Things increases in recent years, research on a power system suitable for the Internet of Things is actively progressing. In particular, the need for a high-efficiency power system has emerged since the IoT devices constituting the sensor network are mainly operated by batteries. Analog power systems can implement a system with a high control bandwidth, but since they are relatively vulnerable to disturbances such as changes in ambient temperature or noise, system characteristics may change and control problems may occur. Accordingly, studies are being conducted to digitize the power system in order to improve the problems of the analog system. Most IoT devices have an active-mode and a sleep-mode and mainly operate in a sleep-mode. Therefore, it is important to show high efficiency under a wide load in active-mode and sleep-mode. In addition, since the high switching frequency of the buck converter generates switching noise and generates EMI. As such, the power system for IoT devices must solve the problems of high efficiency and low EMI over a wide load range. First, in order to support the aforementioned requirements of the power system for IoT devices, in this paper, a PWM/PFM dual mode controller was applied to show high efficiency in a low load current range. Unlike conventional techniques, the load detector for dual mode does not use a current sensor, a load current detection circuit, or a current estimation technique, but by switching the mode through a duty cycle, a low-cost system could be implemented. Second, for the implementation of PWM with high resolution and low EMI, this study proposes integrating the dithering and the random modulation-based RCFMFD. In order to solve the problem of additional EMI caused by the fixed dithering pattern, a random dithering pattern was implemented, and a high-resolution spread spectrum PWM technique was proposed by integrating with the RCFMFD. The proposed system was able to implement high resolution PWM with a low system clock while showing an efficiency of 80% or more under light load conditions and 85% or more under heavy load conditions. It was possible to minimize the occurrence of dependent frequencies due to the fixed dithering pattern. Also, when analyzing the spectrum, it was shown that the switching frequency component was reduced by about 9dB compared to the existing PWM technique.
