The thesis dissertation comprehends the investigation on the pyrolysis properties of aluminum-laminated wastes (ALWs) and its catalytic upgrading. The first chapter is the introduction part which includes the research background and aim/purpose of the study. The previous literatures are reviewed in the second chapter. The third chapter elaborates on the catalytic pyrolysis of Tetra Pak over acidic catalysts using thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and tandem micro reactor-pyrolyzer-gas chromatography/MS (TMR-GC/MS). TG analysis indicated that the aluminum had no impact on the decomposition of the organic components (i.e., Kraft paper and PE), while the acidic catalysts shifted the decomposition temperature of PE from 465 °C to 432 °C by HBeta(38), 439 °C by HZSM-5(30), and 449 °C by Al-MCM-41(20). TMR-GC/MS analysis revealed that the large amounts of oxygenates from Kraft paper and heavy hydrocarbons from PE via non-catalytic pyrolysis were obtained, which were efficiently upgraded to aromatic hydrocarbons over acidic catalysts. HZSM-5(30) produced the largest amounts of aromatic hydrocarbons, followed by HBeta(38) and Al-MCM-41(20), in consequence of their differentiating acidic and pore size properties. The Tetra Pak containing a higher content of PE produced more significant amounts of aromatic hydrocarbons. PE played an influential role as hydrogen donor on the catalytic pyrolysis of hydrogen-deficient Kraft paper, which accredits synergistic aromatic formation. The catalytic effectiveness advocated that HZSM-5(30) had a longer lifetime than HBeta(38) on the sequential pyrolysis reactions performed during the study. The fourth chapter discusses the effective use of the aluminum-plastic laminate as a feedstock for catalytic pyrolysis over micro and mesoporous catalysts.TG analysis results suggested that the decomposition temperatures of polymers were not changed during their co-pyrolysis, indicating any mutual interaction between them. The effect of aluminum foil on the decomposition temperatures was also negligible. The use of acidic catalysts changed the decomposition temperature of APL, i.e., from 472.0 °C to 428.6 °C by HZSM-5(23), 398.1 °C by HY(30), and 459.6 °C by Al-MCM-41(20). TMR-GC/MS results indicated acidic compounds from PET and heavy hydrocarbons from PE, which were converted into aromatic hydrocarbons upon treatment by acidic catalysts. Among three acidic catalysts, HZSM-5 (23) displayed the highest formation efficiency on the production of aromatic hydrocarbons, followed by HY(30) and Al-MCM-41(20). The co-feeding effect of APL was also performed on the catalytic pyrolysis of paper, and results showed that the APL could effectively be used as a co-feeding feedstock on the catalytic pyrolysis of biomass to enhance the synergistic formation efficiency of aromatic hydrocarbons.
