중년기 발달장애인 특화 주간보호서비스 이용 경험에 관한 연구 Study on the Experiences of Participating in a Specialized Day Care Service by Middle-aged Users with Developmental Disabilities원문보기

The aim of this study is to better understand the experience of a specialized day care service used by the middled aged users with developmental disabilities. For the purpose of this study, data was gathered through semi-structured in-depth interviews with fifteen middle aged users of the service who were over forty years old and have developmental disabilities. Each user had three sessions of in-depth interviews. Data gathering took place over the course of four months, from September 30th in 2020 through December 11th in 2020. According to the results derived through Giorgi’s Phenomenological research methods, the experience of the middle-aged users with developmental disabilities using the specialized day care service resulted in twenty-six semantic units, sixteen subcomponents, and four upper components. The four upper components are ‘Previous Life of Using Day Care Service,’ ‘Motive of Using Day Care Service,’ ‘Post Life of Using Day Care Service,’ and ‘Meaning of Using Day Care Service.’ The first upper component is ‘Previous Life of Using Day Care Service.’ The users experienced physical transitions and psychological depression caused by aging. They went through family loss such as the death or diseases of their parents. The users did not have access to day care services because they had not used the service past secondary school. Moreover, the users had difficulty accessing occupational rehabilitation services due to their early retirement. Furthermore, while the users had the desire to do day to day activities, since they did not have a certain given role, they lived tedious home lives. The second upper component is ‘Motive of Using Day Care Service.’ Some users used the service because they did not want their family members to feel the burden of care. In this case, the users handed over their initiative of using service to family members. The other users used the service in order to mitigate social isolation. In this case, the users generally longed for participation in regular outdoor activity services. The third upper component is ‘Post Life of Using Day Care Service.’ The users who used the service went through various cultural leisurely activities. They established relationships with fellow users and workers, vented their loneliness, and formed new social networks with others. Meanwhile, some users encountered several restrictions while using services. For example, some users encountered several restrictions while using services. For example, some users whose physical energy ran out quickly were exhausted easily so that they used the services less often. Furthermore, there was a gap of activity level between 40s and 50s. Also, some users had realistic concerns such as financial issues to pay the service fees. The users who participated in the day care services experienced life changes. The greatest part of the change was that the participants were changed psychologically in a positive way. Moreover, the level of the users’ self-direction was improved, and their vitality of life was increased by having a regular life pattern. The fourth upper component is ‘Meaning of Using Day Care Service.’ The specialized day care service for middled aged users with developmental disabilities is like ‘a learning place,’ ‘a vitalizing place,’ ‘a restful place,’ and ‘another home (or a place like home)’ for users. Firstly, the service is like ‘a learning place,’ because the service continuously offers education and tries to prevent degeneration in the user’s aging function. Secondly, the service is like ‘a vitalizing place,’ because the service provides users a place in which they are able to go, participate, engage with others, and do entertaining things so that users feel refreshed. Thirdly, the service is like ‘a restful place,’ because the users using the service have a peaceful time that they have in their households. The specialized day care service gives an opportunity to have a place to do activities for users who do not feel like they belong anywhere. By so doing, the service becomes a significant place to make the lives of users active and pleasurable. Fourthly, the service is ‘another home (or a place like home).’ Users spend a majority of their time in day care services and build relationships with fellow users as well as workers. By doing so, the lives of service users become abundant. Based on the result, this paper contains the social welfare implications as follows: Firstly, the local community should initiate a daycare service policy customized for middle-aged users who have developmental disabilities in order to prevent their service disconnection. This is because due to the lack of policies to support services for the users at a macro level, the majority of the users have not been provided appropriate services within the community. Secondly, the specialized day care service institutions for the middle-aged who have developmental disabilities are to be expanded. Thirdly, physical health support and psychological health support should be provided for the middle-aged who have developmental disabilities. Fourthly, day care services should be differentiated according to the users’ ages. The services are to be supported differently because there is a remarkable interval of the level of fatigue and the level of participation in the service depending on the users’ ages. Fifthly, the quality of local community participation programs should be improved and developed in order to activate the users’ social interaction. Sixthly, daycare service fees should be reduced because some users cannot afford to pay. Based on this study, we found several social welfare implications. Therefore, based on the implications, we proposed the following statements: Firstly, we suggested a follow-up study of the middle aged with developmental disabilities who have a difficulty to use regular services. Secondly, we suggested the need for research by provider area to develop customized services to support parties and their families. Third, we proposed a follow-up study on the preparation for the life of the middle aged group having developmental disabilities after their retirement to be financially independent.
