Social Skills Rating System(...

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether mothers’ parenting behaviors and mother-child relationships would influence children’s social skills during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study also examined whether change in childcare settings(e.g., changes in the number hours children spent at daycare, changes in primary caregivers) due to COVID-19 affected mother’s parenting, mother-child relationships, and children’s social skills. A total of 162 mothers of children aged 3 to 5 years participated in the study. The experience of changes in childcare settings due to COVID-19 was examined using questions organized by this researcher for the purpose of this study, and mothers' parenting behavior was measured by Choi(2008) based on the parenting behavior scale produced by Park(2001). The mother-child relationship was assessed using the Korean version of the Parenting Relationship Questionnaire (PRQ) standardized by Lee and colleagues(2013) developed by Kamphaus and Reynolds(2006). Children's social skills were measured using mothers' reports on the Korean version of the Social Skills Rating System(K-SSRS) validated by Seo(2004). Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.O to examine descriptive statistics, Cronbach's α, and Pearson's product-moment correlation among the study variables. In addition, an independent sample t-tests were conducted to examine differences in mother’s parenting behavior, mother-child relationships, and children’s social skills following changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, a multi-linear regression analysis was conducted to determine the relative effects of mothers' parenting behavior and mother-child relationships on child social skills. The major results of this study were as follows. First, mother-child relationships were significantly affected by changes in the number of hours children spent at daycare due to COVID-19, and mothers' parenting behavior was also significantly affected by changes in the primary caregiver due to COVID-19. Additionally, changes in mothers' work situations significantly influenced mother-child relationships. Second, during the COVID-19 pandemic, mother-child relationships were found to have significant effects on children's social skills, while mothers' parenting behaviors were not significantly associated with children's social skills. In conclusion, during the COVID-19 pandemic, mother-child relationships appeared to have relatively more significant effects than parenting behavior on children's social skills.
