Effects of Parents’ Psychological Symptoms Under COVID-19, Emotional Reappraisal, and Parenting Control on Young Children’s Aggression원문보기

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of parents’ psychological symptom under COVID-19 and emotional reappraisal on young children's aggression. The subjects of this study was 210 fathers and 216 mothers with three- to five-year-old children across the country. Data were collected from surveys and analyzed using SPSS 26.0 program, conducting frequency, percentage, Cronbach’s α, t-test, F-test, Scheffe post-hoc test and Pearson's product-moment correlation. The path model was tested using the AMOS 22.0 program. The Bootstrapping methods were used to determine the statistical significance of the indirect effects of the parameters.
The results of this study were as follows: First, statistically significant predictor of father's psychological symptom under COVID-19 and psychological control was monthly family income. Second, statistically significant predictors of mother's psychological symptom under COVID-19 were mother's age, level of education, and monthly family income. There were significant difference in mother's emotional reappraisal and psychological control according to mother's job and the level of eduction. Third, father’s psychological symptom under COVID-19 had direct effects on father’s emotional reappraisal, parental control, and both children’s overt and emotional aggression. Father’s emotional reappraisal had direct effects on father's psychological and behavioral control. Father’s psychological affected on children’s overt and emotional aggression while father’s behavioral control only did on children’s overt aggression. Fourth, mother’s psychological symptom under COVID-19 had direct effects on mother’s emotional reappraisal, psychological control, and both children’s overt and emotional aggression. Mother’s emotional reappraisal had direct effects on mother's psychological and behavioral control. Mother’s psychological affected on children’s overt and emotional aggression while mother’s behavioral control only did on children’s overt aggression. Fifth, father’s and mother's psychological symptom under COVID-19 had indirect effects on children’s’ overt and emotional aggression through emotional reappraisal and parental control. In conclusion, the results of the current study highlight the significance of intervention on emotional reappraisal in order to reduce psychological symptom under COVID-19. In addition, this study suggests that interventions should be not only focused on parental psychological control but behavioral control at parent education programs and counseling to weaken the children's aggression.
