A study on the improvement of traditional market alley with the application of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design(CPTED) : focused on the Sagajeong market alley in Jungnang-gu, Seoul원문보기

With the development of society, there is a growing interest in “the quality of life.” “Safety” is one of the factors that improve the quality of life. As much as society develops, crimes that threaten the safety of individuals and society have also become more brutal, intelligent, and diverse. Crime is merely an independent event but rather a factor that causes anxiety in terms of the safety of individuals and society. It often acts as a culprit behind the destruction of a local community by giving the neighborhood a bad reputation. To tackle the problem, people have sought new crime countermeasures that are different from existing methods. A design responding to the demand is Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). It is a preventative action that improves physical environments to prevent crimes instead of following up on crimes after they happen. CPTED projects have been promoted by the central government of Korea, local governments, and other related authorities for crime prevention. However, the subject of these projects has been limited to shared housing such as apartments, and there is a lack of guidelines and research on its application to vulnerable types of housing such as detached houses and multi-family housing in low-rise residential areas. It is especially difficult to find guidelines and research on the CPTED for traditional market alleys. Therefore, this study aims to demonstrate the impact of the application of CPTED to traditional market alleys on “anxiety toward crimes.” For study subjects, this study covers areas around the Sagajeong Station in Jungang-gu, Seoul such as the Sagajeong Market, Myeonmok Market, and alleys in the residential area close to the station. For study methods, a strategy factor checklist was created based on existing CPTED guidelines and used to evaluate the environment of the subjected alleys through a survey. Among the alleys, those in which environment requires improvement were selected for simulations with the application of CPTED. The simulations were presented and evaluated by various subjects for the “crime anxiety” of each area, and the evaluation results were analyzed as follows: First, the survey and simulations showed that the traditional market alleys need improvement in their environments. Second, the improvement of environments through the application of CPTED to traditional market alleys had a positive impact of decreased “crime anxiety.” Third, “Hanpyeong park,” “Division of space,” and “Safe guide,” among factors considered in a CPTED design, should be applied to lower the “crime anxiety.” The significance of this study lies in suggesting the need for the environmental improvement of traditional market alleys and demonstrating potential positive impacts of CPTED principles on the improvement given that currently there are no studies on CPTED in relation to “traditional markets.” This study was conducted in hopes that it would be a useful reference for future CPTED research or the application in the fields and help draw better conclusions through continuous research on the application of CPTED principles in the future.
