This dissertation aims to examine the meaning of pain from the perspective of Viktor Frankl's Meaning of Life and to reveal the implications for today's education.
To this end, we first analyzed how Frankl has developed the Meaning of Life. Second, the analysis proceeded to uncover how pain has been interpreted from religious and philosophical perspectives, and how it is reproduced in modern society today. Third, we identified the basic principles of meaning of life and the human image behind it. Fourth, after understanding the Frankl’s Meaning of Life, we contemplated on the meaning of pain from the perspective of Meaning of Life. Fifth, based on this, the educational significance of pain was presented.
In terms of the data, this study reviewed available literature, including major works by Viktor Frankl, including his books, theses, and academic papers.
Viktor Frankl understands humans based on the following three concepts: freedom of will, will to meaning, and meaning in life. According to Frankl, human beings are just ‘given’ to the world, but have unlimited potential and are open-ended creatures who can make their own existential decisions in accordance with their freedom and responsibility in a given situation. This is possible because of the presence of will to find the meaning in their lives. The meaning in life exists under any circumstances. If everything in life is meaningful, it can be found even in moments of pain.
In terms of Viktor Frankl's Meaning of Life, pain has the following implications. First, pain awakens human beings in everyday life. Second, pain enables mental improvement by letting human beings confront it. Third, pain makes us realize the meaning of life. Pain is no longer the subject of negative avoidance, but an opportunity to find the meaning of life. Fourth, empathy for the pain of others may enable the maintenance of a community and the creation of a new culture in society.
The understanding of pain in Frankl's Meaning of Life has the following educational implications. First, pain is meaningful as an opportunity to lead to educational growth for the development of life. This suggests that mental improvement through the discovery of the meaning of life, which has thus far has been overlooked in education, should be reconsidered as an educational goal in an educational atmosphere to accept pain as it is. Second, philosophical counseling is an educationally meaningful practical way to overcome today's educational limits and to identify the true meaning of one’s pain and discover the meaning of life and achieve mental improvement. The methods of 'conversation' and 'philosophical reasoning' in philosophy counseling are specific methods applicable to educational sites.
