This study elaborates on the commonalities and differences between Korean and Chinese kinship terminologies from morphological, semantic and pragmatic perspectives. It’s quite common for Korean and Chinese languages to use multiple terms of address and terms of reference to refer to a single member of kindred and thus kinship terms and the signified objects are distributed asymmetrically. Depending on the situations, different terms of kinship are chosen, and their usages also vary. It is these subtle semantic and pragmatic differences of the kinship terms in Korean and Chinese that this dissertation intends to reveal. In addition, both Korean and Chinese kinship terms can be neatly categorized according to gender and position in the family hierarchy. Although there do exist some overlaps between different genders and between different positions in the family hierarchy, they are small in amount. Since peers often address each other by names and the seniors also commonly address the younger by names, the kinship terms in these categories are not very diverse in their morphological forms. Chapter two of the dissertation focuses on the kinship terms in four categories: parents; grandparents; peers of parents and their spouses; and siblings. After comparing the Korean and Chinese terms of address and terms of reference, cases are analyzed in order to demonstrate the differences in actual usage, and the causes of the differences are also investigated. Korean kinship terms are divided into basic type, close type, and elevated type, while Chinese kinship terms are divided into one-syllable basic type and two-syllable close type. The Korean elevated type is mainly realized by adding the honorific suffix ‘-님’. Since there is no such suffix in Chinese, the honorific form is realized by adding a specific word if necessary. As for the terms of reference, the place name or the name of the eldest son is added in Korean. In Chinese, pronouns such as ‘我/咱/你’ are added in front of kinship terms. The name of one’s child is also used in Chinese together with the pronoun ‘他(她)’ inserted in the middle in the form of ‘○○[name of the child]他爸’ in Chinese. Chapter three analyzes the similarities and differences between Korean and Chinese kinship terms from the perspective of morphology, semantics, and pragmatics. Morphologically, both Korean and Chinese kinship terms are classified into single words and compound words, but the formation of compound words are different. In both Korean and Chinese languages, derivation and compounding are the main word formation processes for kinship terms. Since the kinship terms indicate the relationships between people, and their nuclei are positioned on the right, the dependent compounding is the most basic word formation process of kinship terms. Korean is an agglutinative language, so derivatives dominate, and in particular, the prefix derivation comes in a variety of forms. The most outstanding feature of word formation of Chinese kinship terms is reduplication. A prefix or quasi-prefix is often added to kinship terms both in Korean and Chinese languages. Korean prefixes are used without changing their original meanings, but Chinese prefixes are used by maintaining both the original and the changed meanings. In terms of the number of syllables, three-syllable kinship terms are dominant in Korean, while two-syllable kinship terms are most commonly seen in Chinese. This shows the different morphological characteristics of the two languages. Korean kinship terms are developed in honorific forms. An honorific suffix, such as ‘-님’, combines freely with many kinship terms in Korean, but there is no such suffixation in Chinese. From perspective of semantics, both polysemies and monosemies can be observed in both Korean and Chinese kinship terms. Chinese kinship terms, however, are comparatively more dominated by monosemies. Social titles are used, through semantic expansion, as kinship terms in both Korean and Chinese languages, but the word selections differ from each other. Korean kinship terms prefer indigenous words in their original forms while Chinese kinship terms favor colloquial expressions often with affixes. It can be explained as driven by the psychology of Chinese people to distinguish kinship terms from non-kinship expressions. By analyzing kinship terms, which is one of the most basic components of the lexis, this dissertation probes into the morphological, semantic and pragmatic differences of Korean and Chinese languages and confirms the heterogeneity and homogeneity of the two languages.
