As the necessity for animal and environmental protection has soared around the world, an increased number of people are pursuing vegan lifestyles not eating or using anything related to animals in the domains of fashion, beauty, or daily necessities as well as food. The term vegan fashion is being used in a broad sense by considering the environmental factors beyond the furs or leathers of animals in the fashion field. However, there is a lack of research about awareness and design research on vegan leathers. Thus, this study investigated the design preference of women in their 20s and 30s, who showed a high frequency of fashion consumption. Based on the results, designs using vegan cactus leathers were developed and a design was prototyped. Face-to-face and online interviews were conducted with women in their 20s and 30s using convenience and snowball sampling methods. Leather experts were interviewed about what to consider when using cactus leather. The recorded interviews were transcribed, and major keywords were extracted and classified. The key findings of this study are as follows. First, 75.0% of study participants mentioned being interested in Vegan fashion, and 10.7% of them have known vegan leathers. As a result of classifying the upper-class keywords, those were categorized into environmental protection types, animal protection types, sustainable fashion, and indifference types. Among the participants, 78.6% mentioned that they did not know that it could be incorporated into fashion, and 42.9% of the participants have experienced purchasing vegan products. Second, durability, which was concerned with fraying or wrinkles, was the most important consideration when purchasing vegan cactus leather products, followed by formability due to concerns about shape deformation, manageability including washing and management storage, practicality, lightness, and functionality. Third, outerwear (64.3%) ranked the highest among the vegan cactus leather fashion products from the design preference perspective, and trench coats (35.7%) were the highest among outerwear items. The participants mentioned that this is because innerwear and bottoms are difficult to wash. In terms of color, black (53.6%) was the most common. Participants mentioned that the color is plain, that the color migration is less noticeable, and that it fits everywhere. In silhouette, the X-line (32.1%) was most popular because participants preferred a design that was emphasized by tightening the waist, and a total length reaching the shins was the most preferred (32.1%) so that it can cover the hips to make the legs look longer. They preferred a flat collar (44.0%) and necklines that do not come up to the neck. In the front closure, buttons (69.2%) were preferable to casual zippers. Buckles (31.8%) or cuffs (31.8%) were preferred for sleeves, as were designs with no waist belt; most of the participants who mentioned a trench coat preferred to have buckles and belts. Subsequently, there were many opinions to show the uniqueness of leather in other epaulets (96.4%), front wing (96.4%), and rear wing (92.9%) as well as in pocket design, including shim pocket (28.6%). Fourth, when fabricating leather products, care should be taken against sunlight and heat, and the upper thread should be thinner by one number than the lower thread so that it is not bumpy when sewing. It was also found that the methods of attaching reinforcing tape before sewing should be considered in order not to prevent spandex from being pushed. Based on the study, five fashion designs applied with vegan cactus leather were developed, virtually prototyped using the Clo3D software program, and a design was prototyped into a wearable product using vegan cactus leather. It is expected that designers and developers in the fashion field can use the findings of this study when developing fashion products using vegan leather.
