In order to develop and utilize a variety of cutting-edge applications, high-power pulsed lasers that use a solid-state material as a gain medium are increasing the energy per pulse and the repetition rate. This direction of laser development inevitable boosts the thermal load on the laser system. Especially, a gain medium that generates significant heat due to the quantum defects in the amplification prcess and an optical compressor interacting with a fully amplified beam with an average power of hundreds of watts are subjected to a strong thermal effect. The thermal effect appears as a thermal lens effect and depolarization. The existing models of thermal effects are limited to simple isotropic media, so the application of anisotropic media typified by Ti:sapphire has hardly been introduced and their development, maintenance, and repair have been carried out based on experimental measurements. This study proposes a thermal effect model applicable to all kind of medium, including anisotropic media. In particular, the photo-elastic effect due to thermal stress is provided in the form of a systemic differential equation using the Jones matrix to analyze the beam’s distortion of three effect: an amplification effect, an intrinsic birefringence effect, and the thermal birefringence effect. The proposed thermal effect model was analyzed for the existing Ti:sapphire lasers and verified to be useful by comparing the measured values. Also, this model is used in the design of a PW-class laser system to induce distortions in the spatio-temporal domain and remove them. Regarding the optical compressor for high – average-power lasers, this model is applied to a high repetition laser system in which the performance of the laser amplifier is limited due to the thermal distortion from the compressor. The distortion mitigating method for the optical compressor was provided based on the results of sophisticated simulations, The thermal distortion of laser beam is a problem that will continue to be encountered right now and, in the future, and this study is of importance as a precise sumulation tool for solving the problem.
