This study is a quasi experimental study of non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design aiming to identify the effects of binaural beats on pain and anxiety in patients with surgery under local anesthesia and evaluate its applicability in clinical practice. Fifty four patients undergoing surgery using local anesthesia at A Hospital in Seoul were included in this study. The data was collected from February 2021 to May 2021, and the collected data were analyzed using the SPSS version 25.0 program. The general characteristics of subjects were analyzed by descriptive analyses. χ2-test and t-test were used to evaluate the homogeneity between the experimental group and control group and two-way repeated measures ANOVA was performed to test the hypothesis. The findings of the present study are as follows. Hypothesis 1: : The hypothesis was supported in that statistically significant differences were found in repeatedly measured the pain level between each time points(F=40.04, p<.001), and also in the degree of interaction between each group and time point was found. Hypothesis 2: The hypothesis was supported in that statistically significant differences were found in repeatedly measured the state anxiety level between each time points(F=69.35, p<.001), and also in the degree of interaction between each group and time point was found. Hypothesis 3-1: The hypothesis was rejected in that no significant difference in the interaction between each group and time point was found depite the significant differences found in repeated measurements between each time points(F=9.08, p<.001). Hypothesis 3-2: The hypothesis was rejected in that no significant difference in the interaction between each group and time point was found despite the significant differences found in repeated measurements between each time point(F=15.89, p<.001). Hypothesis 3-3: The hypothesis was supported in that statistically significant differences were found in repeatedly measured heart rates between each time points(F=97.71, p<.001), and also in the degree of interaction between each group and time point was found. The results above showed that binaural beats are effective in alleviating post-operative pain and state anxiety in patients with surgery under local anesthesia and also in reducing pulse rate, which is a physiological indicator of state anxiety, confirming that binaural beats sound is an effective nursing intervention to reduce postoperative anxiety and pain. Therefore, based on the findings of this study, it is expected that the binaural beats could be continuously used as an effective non-invasive nursing intervention to reduce postoperative pain and anxiety in patients with surgery under local anesthesia.
