Investigating the crowding-out effect in water parks: The effects of the perceived crowding, image-purpose homogeneity and psychological distance원문보기

The aim of this study was to examine crowding-out effect among visitors by other visitors in the water parks. More specifically, the study investigated whether visitors’ perceived crowding predicts crowding-out effect and verified the roles of the fit between visitors’ perceived image on water park and visiting purpose as well as psychological distance from place of residence to the water parks. Based on the compatibility management theory, the role of fit between visitors’ perceived image on water park and visiting purpose was proposed and the role of psychological distance from place of residence to the water parks was proposed according to construal level theory. The target sample is individuals who had visited top 3 water parks in South Korea before COVID-19 outbreak, and a total of 314 responses collected from visitors were analyzed. The reliability and validity of the measurements and constructs were confirmed through measurement model analysis. Additionally, the hypotheses established in this study were verified using structural equation modeling analysis, t-test and multiple group analysis. Analyses results revealed that the visitors' perceived crowding in the water parks enhances the crowding-out effect. In addition, the fit between visitors’ perceived image on water parks and visiting purpose and psychological distance were found to make difference in perceiving crowding of the water parks. Lastly, both the image-purpose fit and the psychological distance significantly moderated the effects of visitors’ perceived crowding on the crowding-out effect. Based on the research findings, critical ways to manage visitors’ crowding perception to prevent crowding-out effect were suggested, and academic implications were discussed.
