Microalgae have attracted much attention, due to their beneficial characteristics, such as an efficient CO2 capturing ability, a higher productivity and no competition with crop plants for producing biofuel. Production processes of microalgal biofuels are subdivided into harvesting, drying, extraction, and transesterification. Such complex processes lead to higher production cost. And algal-biodiesel conventionally have high portions of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which reduces the biodiesel oxidative stability. Therefore, microalgal biofuel has two major hurdles: 1) expensive production cost and 2) oxidation instability. To overcome these limiting factors, piggery wastewater was used for microalgal biomass production as a result of wastewater treatment. The utilized nutrients and carbon dioxide by microalgae were finally converted to biodiesel raw materials such as lipids and triacylglycerol with better qualities for biodiesel. From the biomass after treatment process, fatty acid profiles were drastically changed from PUFA to monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) and saturated fatty acid (SFA). MUFA and SFA can increase the oxidation stabilities of fatty acids, and it would lead to resolving the algal fatty acid disadvantage. Through this advanced algal wastewater treatment, over 99% ammonia, 92% chemical oxygen demand, and 100% phosphorus were eliminated from undiluted piggery wastewater, at only 4-days period. Indigenous human pathogens in piggery wastewater such as Oligella, Arcobacter, Treponema, and Acinetobacter were also removed significantly by algal treatment. Specifically, the genus of Oligella was defined urethral infection strain for human. When these pathogens were discharged to freshwater without removal, it could be a menace to human and environmental systems. Therefore, almost bacterial piggery wastewater treatment systems have been adopting the ultraviolet or physical sterilization process just before the final effluent treatment process. This microalgal treatment system might be considered as an effective strategy of 1) enhanced wastewater treatment with economic production of biofuel and 2) efficient management of freshwater ecosystems with reduced human health risk.
